About the job Remote | Child & Adolescent Mental Health AI Safety Advisor — $75–$145/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for US-based child and adolescent psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and mental health researchers with expertise in youth mental health, suicide prevention, self-harm assessment, digital mental health, or evidence-based therapy.
This role supports an AI safety research initiative focused on evaluating how companion chatbots respond to adolescents experiencing mental health challenges. Selected professionals will develop clinically realistic case scenarios, help establish evaluation standards, review AI-generated conversations, and provide expert guidance across suicide risk, therapeutic boundaries, emotional dependency, and developmentally appropriate support.
Key Responsibilities
Adolescent Mental Health Scenario Development
- Author fictionalised case scenarios informed by real-world child and adolescent mental health practice
- Develop scenarios involving suicide risk, self-harm, emotional distress, therapeutic guidance, and dependency concerns
- Ensure cases reflect realistic developmental, family, social, and clinical contexts
- Define relevant risk indicators, safeguarding considerations, and expected response principles
Clinical & Developmental Review
- Review scenarios for clinical realism, developmental appropriateness, and ethical quality
- Assess whether adolescent language, behaviour, symptoms, and circumstances are represented accurately
- Identify missing risk factors, unrealistic assumptions, and potentially misleading clinical framing
- Apply child and adolescent mental health expertise across complex and sensitive cases
AI Conversation Evaluation
- Review selected AI-generated conversations involving fictional adolescent users
- Assess risk recognition, response quality, emotional tone, escalation, and crisis-referral decisions
- Evaluate whether chatbot responses maintain appropriate therapeutic and relational boundaries
- Identify responses that may reinforce emotional dependency, discourage trusted relationships, or overstate the system's capabilities
- Provide structured clinical judgments that support evaluation-system calibration
Rubric Development & Safety Guidance
- Help develop and refine clinician-informed scoring rubrics for chatbot responses
- Define evaluation criteria covering safety, empathy, developmental appropriateness, clinical accuracy, and escalation
- Advise on best practices for assessing suicide and self-harm responses, therapeutic impersonation, and parasocial attachment
- Collaborate with researchers to maintain consistent standards across scenarios and evaluation workflows
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:

- Expertise in child and adolescent psychiatry, clinical child psychology, suicide prevention, self-harm assessment, or digital mental health
- Experience with evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy or dialectical behaviour therapy
- Strong understanding of risk recognition, safety planning, crisis referral, and safeguarding
- Excellent written communication and the ability to provide structured clinical feedback
- Comfort reviewing fictional clinical cases and AI-generated mental health conversations
- Availability to contribute approximately 10–15 hours per week
- Current residence in the United States
Educational Background
- An MD, DO, PhD, PsyD, or equivalent advanced qualification in psychiatry, psychology, or a related mental health field is required
- Specialist training in child and adolescent psychiatry, clinical child psychology, suicidology, or digital mental health is highly relevant

- Active clinical, academic, research, or advisory experience may strengthen an application

- Published or academic research in adolescent mental health, suicide prevention, digital therapeutics, or conversational technologies
- Experience developing clinical guidelines, assessment frameworks, educational materials, or quality standards
- Prior work involving AI, digital health platforms, mental health products, or chatbot evaluation
