About the job Remote | Legal Counsel (Sanctions, Structured Finance or Life Sciences) — $140–$150/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for qualified lawyers with deep, current practice experience in sanctions and export controls, structured finance and securitisation, or life sciences and pharmaceutical regulatory law.

This role involves reviewing realistic legal matters within your own area of specialisation and comparing multiple blinded legal work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and practical usefulness. Reviewers are assigned exclusively to matters aligned with their professional expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Specialist Legal Review

  • Review realistic legal matters and supporting source documents within your own practice area
  • Assess legal analysis for substantive accuracy, completeness, and professional quality
  • Identify material errors, omissions, unsupported conclusions, or weaknesses in legal judgement
  • Evaluate whether work products reflect current specialist legal practice
  • Apply deep subject-matter expertise to technically demanding legal questions

Sanctions & Export Controls

  • Review matters involving sanctions and export-control requirements where aligned with your practice
  • Assess regulatory analysis, restrictions, licensing considerations, and compliance implications
  • Evaluate whether legal conclusions appropriately reflect applicable regulatory frameworks
  • Identify incomplete or inaccurate treatment of sanctions or export-control issues
  • Apply current practitioner judgement to complex cross-border regulatory matters

Structured Finance & Securitisation

  • Review matters involving structured finance and securitisation transactions where aligned with your expertise
  • Assess transaction structures, documentation, legal analysis, and risk allocation
  • Evaluate whether work products accurately address relevant financing considerations
  • Identify material omissions or technically weak conclusions
  • Apply specialist judgement grounded in current structured-finance practice

Life Sciences & Pharmaceutical Regulatory

  • Review matters involving life sciences and pharmaceutical regulation where aligned with your practice
  • Assess regulatory analysis affecting pharmaceutical or life-sciences businesses
  • Evaluate legal conclusions for accuracy, completeness, and practical usefulness
  • Identify missing considerations or unsupported regulatory interpretations
  • Apply current industry-specific legal judgement to specialised matters

Blinded Legal Work Product Comparison

  • Read a synthetic legal matter and its underlying documents
  • Review six blinded legal deliverables, labelled A–F
  • Complete five head-to-head comparisons against a common comparator output
  • Evaluate each work product holistically rather than focusing on isolated drafting differences
  • Select the stronger response based on substantive legal quality

Legal Quality Evaluation

  • Assess work products for correctness, completeness, judgement, and usefulness
  • Identify material legal errors or omissions
  • Evaluate whether reasoning is coherent and adequately supported
  • Assess whether conclusions would be useful to practising lawyers in the relevant specialism
  • Distinguish substantive quality differences from minor stylistic preferences

Written Legal Reasoning

  • Provide a short, specific rationale for every preference decision
  • Explain the legal and practical considerations supporting each judgement
  • Reference relevant strengths, weaknesses, or omissions in the reviewed work
  • Maintain precise and professional written English
  • Follow project instructions and evaluation criteria consistently

Ideal Profile

  • Qualified lawyer with deep, current professional experience in at least one of the following:
