About the job Remote | STEM OCR Specialists — $25–$40/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for STEM professionals with strong experience in mathematical reasoning, OCR validation, precise transcription, and LaTeX-based formatting.
This role supports an exciting collaboration with a leading frontier AI research laboratory focused on improving math and STEM reasoning through high-quality training and evaluation data built from public-domain textbooks.
Selected professionals will validate and repair extracted problem-solution content, compare OCR outputs against source textbook PDFs, correct transcription and formatting issues, and help ensure that mathematical and STEM materials are accurate, structured, and usable for advanced AI model training and evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
Professionals in this role may contribute to:
OCR Validation & Text Correction
Validate math and STEM question-answer pairs extracted from textbook PDFs and identify errors introduced by OCR or extraction workflows
Compare extracted text against source PDFs and correct transcription issues such as symbols, subscripts, superscripts, missing terms, and malformed expressions
Revise raw textbook content into clean QA format when original material is demonstrative or references missing equations or figures
LaTeX Formatting & Content Structuring
Fix and standardize LaTeX formatting so all expressions render correctly and match the source material
Extract and label relevant context including problem statements, surrounding definitions, hints, solution steps, and short answers
Record correct PDF viewer page numbers and maintain structured formatting across textbook-derived content
Quality Review & Mathematical Verification
Assess solution quality for correctness, completeness, and logical consistency
Flag gaps, incorrect reasoning steps, or mismatches between the solution and the stated answer
Maintain consistently high standards for precision, structure, and correctness across all assigned content
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
Strong proficiency with LaTeX math formatting
A background in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a related STEM field through BA/BS, Master's, PhD, or equivalent rigorous training
Comfort reading and verifying multi-step mathematical reasoning, including proofs and textbook solutions
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow a structured workflow exactly
Strong written communication skills for clear and concise technical notes
Preferred qualifications
Proof-based coursework such as real analysis, abstract algebra, or proof-based linear algebra
Experience as a TA, grader, tutor, contest solution writer, or math editor
Familiarity with common OCR failure modes in STEM text, including misread symbols, broken equations, and malformed fractions
Ability to work with advanced undergraduate and occasional graduate-level material
