About the job Remote | Mechanical Engineer — $65–$75/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced mechanical engineers with substantial expertise in enterprise product design, manufacturing, engineering analysis, and technical decision-making within complex industrial environments.
This role supports an advanced AI initiative focused on developing realistic mechanical engineering evaluation tasks reflecting the design complexity, safety requirements, and production scale of Fortune 500 and major industrial organisations. The project includes both US standards-based workflows centred on ASME and international workflows centred on ISO, and professionals experienced in either or both standards frameworks are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Engineering Scenario Development
- Design realistic enterprise mechanical engineering scenarios covering complex product-development cycles
- Develop tasks involving multi-stakeholder design reviews, manufacturing processes, and engineering certification workflows
- Create scenarios reflecting practical constraints encountered in large industrial and manufacturing organisations
- Incorporate safety, reliability, regulatory, production, and commercial considerations into engineering problems
Product Design & Engineering Analysis
- Build tasks involving product design, CAD modelling, thermal and fluid systems, structural analysis, and stress analysis
- Develop scenarios involving manufacturing process engineering and reliability or failure analysis
- Produce reference design specifications, engineering calculations, analyses, and technical recommendations
- Evaluate engineering decisions using realistic enterprise requirements and constraints
Engineering Tools & Methodologies
- Develop scenarios involving tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, and comparable engineering platforms
- Incorporate enterprise PLM workflows using systems such as Siemens Teamcenter or PTC Windchill where relevant
- Apply FEA and CFD methodologies to appropriate engineering scenarios
- Incorporate DFM/DFA, Six Sigma, DFSS, and related engineering methodologies
- Apply GD&T principles using ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS standards where appropriate
Technical Evaluation & Rubric Development
- Draft high-quality reference outputs demonstrating experienced engineering judgment
- Develop detailed evaluation rubrics for complex mechanical engineering tasks
- Distinguish professional engineering reasoning from generic or coursework-level responses
- Assess technical accuracy, practical feasibility, safety considerations, and engineering trade-offs
- Create technical narratives suitable for senior engineering and executive stakeholders
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
- At least 5 years of professional mechanical engineering experience
- Experience working within a major industrial, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, or comparable enterprise environment
- Direct responsibility for significant product designs, manufacturing processes, or engineering programmes
- Strong knowledge of mechanical product development and design-review processes
- Practical experience with structural, thermal, fluid, manufacturing, or reliability engineering
- Familiarity with enterprise engineering tools and product lifecycle workflows
- Strong understanding of safety, regulatory, and certification considerations
- Excellent technical writing, analytical reasoning, and engineering judgment
Educational Background
- A degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is highly relevant
- Advanced engineering education may strengthen an application
- Professional experience involving complex mechanical systems, product development, or manufacturing is particularly valuable
- A professional engineering credential such as PE, CEng, EUR ING, or an equivalent international qualification may strengthen an application
Nice to Have
- Experience with SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, or MATLAB/Simulink
- Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, or comparable PLM systems
- Advanced experience with FEA or CFD
- Knowledge of DFM/DFA, Six Sigma, or DFSS methodologies
- Experience applying ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS standards
- Familiarity with ASME, ISO, FAA, FDA, or other relevant engineering and certification frameworks
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering design reviews
- Background authoring technical documentation, engineering training materials, or structured evaluation rubrics
Why This Opportunity
- Apply senior-level mechanical engineering expertise to advanced AI evaluation work
- Develop realistic engineering scenarios based on complex enterprise workflows
- Work across product design, simulation, manufacturing, reliability, and certification
- Apply ASME or ISO engineering standards within practical evaluation tasks
- Help improve how AI systems reason through sophisticated mechanical engineering problems
- Participate in flexible remote consulting work with competitive hourly compensation
Contract Details
- Independent contractor role
- Fully remote with flexible scheduling
- Competitive rates between $65–$75 per hour depending on expertise and project scope
- Work may include engineering scenario development, reference-answer creation, technical analysis, rubric authoring, and output evaluation
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
- Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
