About the job Remote | Civil Engineer — $65–$75/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced civil engineers with substantial expertise in large-scale infrastructure, construction, structural design, transportation, water resources, geotechnical engineering, or project delivery.
This role supports an advanced AI initiative focused on developing realistic civil engineering evaluation tasks that reflect the design complexity, public-safety considerations, and regulatory requirements of major infrastructure and construction programmes. The project includes both international standards based on Eurocodes and ISO and US standards including ASCE, ACI, AISC, and AASHTO.
Key Responsibilities
Civil Engineering Scenario Development
- Design realistic civil engineering scenarios involving major infrastructure and construction projects
- Develop tasks covering complex design cycles, permitting, regulatory review, and construction delivery
- Incorporate real-world stakeholder, safety, environmental, and project constraints
- Create scenarios that require experienced professional engineering judgment
Engineering Design & Analysis
- Build tasks involving structural design and analysis
- Develop transportation, highway, water resources, environmental, and geotechnical engineering scenarios
- Apply structural load analysis, geotechnical site assessment, and hydrology or hydraulic modelling where relevant
- Produce reference engineering calculations, design plans, and technical recommendations
- Evaluate practical engineering trade-offs and project constraints
Engineering Tools & Standards
- Develop scenarios involving AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, HEC-RAS, and comparable engineering tools
- Incorporate enterprise project-management workflows used in major infrastructure programmes
- Apply relevant US standards including ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, and AASHTO LRFD
- Apply international standards including Eurocodes EN 1990–1998 and applicable ISO standards
- Ensure technical outputs reflect appropriate regulatory and professional standards
Technical Evaluation & Rubric Development
- Draft high-quality reference outputs for complex civil engineering tasks
- Develop detailed evaluation rubrics reflecting professional engineering judgment
- Distinguish practical engineering reasoning from generic textbook-level responses
- Assess technical accuracy, feasibility, safety, compliance, and project-delivery considerations
- Produce clear technical narratives for regulatory, stakeholder, and project-management contexts
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
- At least 5 years of professional civil engineering experience
- Experience working with a major engineering consultancy, construction company, infrastructure organisation, or public agency
- Direct responsibility for significant infrastructure designs, permitting processes, or construction projects
- Expertise in one or more areas including structural, transportation, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, or construction engineering
- Strong understanding of engineering standards, regulatory approvals, and public-sector oversight
- Experience working across multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder engineering projects
- Excellent technical writing, analytical reasoning, and professional judgment
Educational Background
- A degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is highly relevant
- Advanced engineering education may strengthen an application
- Professional experience involving major infrastructure or construction projects is particularly valuable
- A recognised professional engineering credential such as PE, CEng, EUR ING, P.Eng, or an equivalent qualification is strongly preferred
Nice to Have
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, STAAD.Pro, ETABS, or HEC-RAS
- Familiarity with structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, or transportation modelling
- Experience applying ASCE, ACI, AISC, or AASHTO standards
- Knowledge of Eurocodes or ISO engineering standards
- Familiarity with environmental review processes such as NEPA or international equivalents
- Experience managing permitting or regulatory approval processes
- Background leading multidisciplinary engineering reviews
- Prior experience writing engineering documentation, training materials, or structured evaluation rubrics
Why This Opportunity
- Apply senior-level civil engineering expertise to advanced AI evaluation work
- Develop realistic infrastructure and construction scenarios grounded in professional practice
- Work across structural, transportation, geotechnical, water resources, and project-delivery workflows
- Apply US or international engineering standards to complex technical problems
- Help improve how AI systems reason through sophisticated civil engineering scenarios
- Participate in flexible remote consulting work with competitive hourly compensation
Contract Details
- Independent contractor role
- Fully remote with flexible scheduling
- Competitive rates between $65–$75 per hour depending on expertise and project scope
- Work may include engineering scenario development, technical analysis, reference-answer creation, rubric authoring, and output evaluation
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
- Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
