We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for plasma and fusion physics professionals with advanced expertise in magnetic confinement, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma transport, and scientific problem development.

This role supports an advanced AI research initiative focused on strengthening expert-level scientific reasoning. Selected professionals will author challenging plasma and fusion physics problems, review peer-developed tasks for accuracy and difficulty, and evaluate AI-generated solutions using rigorous scientific standards.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Problem Development

  • Design expert-level problems in plasma physics and fusion energy
  • Develop tasks involving magnetic confinement, tokamaks, stellarators, magnetohydrodynamics, and gyrokinetics
  • Create problems requiring multi-step scientific reasoning and technically defensible conclusions
  • Prepare clear reference solutions and supporting explanations

Peer Review & Validation

  • Review problems authored by other plasma and fusion specialists
  • Assess task clarity, scientific accuracy, originality, and genuine difficulty
  • Verify assumptions, equations, methodology, and ground-truth solutions
  • Identify ambiguity, missing information, and technical inconsistencies

AI Solution Evaluation

  • Review and compare AI-generated solutions to advanced scientific problems
  • Assess calculations, physical reasoning, methodology, and final conclusions
  • Identify unsupported assumptions, conceptual errors, and incomplete analyses
  • Assign Accept, Revise, or Reject outcomes with detailed written rationale

Scientific Quality Assurance

  • Apply consistent evaluation standards across problems and model outputs
  • Refine tasks and reference solutions based on peer feedback
  • Maintain high standards of scientific rigour and technical documentation
  • Collaborate asynchronously with researchers and fellow subject-matter experts

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • Advanced research experience in plasma physics, fusion energy, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on expertise in magnetic-confinement fusion
  • Experience with tokamak or stellarator research and design
  • Strong knowledge of MHD, plasma transport, or gyrokinetic simulation
  • Ability to develop and solve technically challenging scientific problems
  • Excellent scientific writing and close attention to detail
  • Experience reviewing research, technical analyses, or advanced academic work

Educational Background

  • A PhD in plasma physics, fusion science, nuclear engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field is highly relevant
  • Equivalent research experience involving advanced plasma or fusion systems may also be considered
  • Postdoctoral, university, national-laboratory, or industry research experience may strengthen an application
  • Publications or significant technical contributions in plasma and fusion research may be valuable

Nice to Have

  • Research involving magnetic-confinement fusion systems
  • Experience with tokamak or stellarator modelling
  • Expertise in magnetohydrodynamic stability and plasma equilibrium
  • Background in gyrokinetic or plasma-transport simulations
  • Familiarity with scientific computing and numerical modelling
  • Experience teaching, grading, peer reviewing, or developing advanced physics problems
  • Previous exposure to AI evaluation, rubric development, or technical training-data projects
  • Experience communicating complex scientific concepts through structured written explanations
