About the job Remote | Cross-Disciplinary STEM Research Specialist — Up to $70/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for broad-based science professionals with strong expertise across multiple STEM disciplines, advanced scientific reasoning, and experience developing or reviewing complex technical problems.

This role supports an advanced AI research initiative focused on strengthening expert-level scientific reasoning across physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Selected professionals will author challenging cross-disciplinary problems, review peer-developed tasks for accuracy and difficulty, and evaluate AI-generated solutions and multi-step reasoning using rigorous scientific standards.

Key Responsibilities

Cross-Disciplinary Problem Development

  • Design expert-level problems spanning physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and related scientific fields
  • Develop olympiad-style questions and agentic scientific-discovery tasks
  • Create problems requiring multi-step reasoning, synthesis across disciplines, and technically defensible conclusions
  • Prepare clear reference solutions and supporting explanations
  • Ensure tasks test genuine scientific understanding rather than surface-level recall

Peer Review & Ground-Truth Validation

  • Review scientific problems authored by other subject-matter experts
  • Assess task clarity, originality, difficulty, and cross-disciplinary accuracy
  • Verify assumptions, calculations, methodology, and reference solutions
  • Identify ambiguity, missing information, internal contradictions, and unsupported conclusions
  • Recommend revisions that strengthen scientific rigour and grading reliability

AI Solution Evaluation

  • Review and compare AI-generated solutions across multiple STEM domains
  • Assess calculations, scientific reasoning, methodology, and final conclusions
  • Evaluate multi-step reasoning trajectories for logical consistency and technical accuracy
  • Identify conceptual errors, unsupported assumptions, and incomplete analyses
  • Assign Accept, Revise, or Reject outcomes with detailed written rationale

Scientific Quality Assurance

  • Apply consistent evaluation standards across disciplines and task formats
  • Distinguish minor presentation issues from material scientific errors
  • Refine problems, reference answers, and evaluation criteria based on reviewer feedback
  • Collaborate asynchronously with researchers and fellow scientific specialists
  • Maintain meticulous documentation throughout review and evaluation workflows

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • Demonstrated breadth and depth across multiple STEM disciplines
  • Strong expertise in at least two areas among physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics
  • Ability to assess technical correctness beyond a single narrow specialisation
  • Experience solving or developing complex, multi-step scientific problems
  • Strong analytical reasoning and scientific judgment
  • Excellent scientific writing and meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience reviewing research, technical analyses, competition problems, or advanced academic work
  • Ability to communicate complex reasoning clearly and precisely

Educational Background

  • An advanced degree in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, or a related scientific discipline is highly relevant
  • Equivalent research, competition, teaching, or professional experience demonstrating exceptional interdisciplinary scientific ability may also be considered
  • Academic research, publications, technical projects, or significant contributions across multiple STEM fields may strengthen an application
  • Participation in advanced science or mathematics competitions may be particularly valuable

Nice to Have

  • Medal or high-level participation in IPhO, IChO, IBO, IMO, or comparable competitions
  • Experience as a science competition winner, problem author, coach, or evaluator
  • Background as a polymath researcher working across multiple scientific domains
  • Familiarity with scientific discovery, experimental design, or computational research
  • Experience teaching, grading, peer reviewing, or developing advanced STEM problems
  • Previous exposure to AI evaluation, rubric development, or technical training-data projects
  • Ability to assess both conventional scientific questions and open-ended discovery tasks
  • Experience evaluating long-form reasoning or structured problem-solving trajectories

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply broad scientific expertise to frontier AI research
  • Develop challenging problems across multiple STEM disciplines
  • Help improve how AI systems reason through complex scientific questions
  • Evaluate both final answers and multi-step reasoning processes
  • Collaborate with researchers and highly experienced scientific specialists
  • Participate in flexible remote work with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Compensation of up to $70 per hour depending on expertise and project scope
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
  • Work may include problem development, peer review, AI solution evaluation, reasoning assessment, and scientific quality assurance
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
  • Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
