About the job Remote | English Songwriter & Lyricist (US/UK/Australia) — $30–$55/hour
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced English-language music professionals with backgrounds in songwriting, lyric writing, composition, performance, or music journalism.
This role focuses on evaluating generated music and lyrics across a wide range of contemporary genres. Selected experts will assess lyrical quality, creativity, originality, linguistic naturalness, and alignment with detailed project criteria, applying professional knowledge of English-language music, songwriting conventions, slang, and regional expression.
Key Responsibilities
Lyrics Evaluation
- Review English-language lyrics for overall quality, creativity, coherence, and originality
- Assess whether lyrics sound natural and professionally written
- Evaluate word choice, phrasing, idiomatic language, slang, and regional expressions
- Identify awkward, generic, repetitive, or stylistically inconsistent writing
- Apply professional lyrical judgement across different genres and creative styles
Originality & Similarity Review
- Compare generated lyrics with published songs to identify meaningful similarities
- Assess whether phrases, structures, themes, or lyrical patterns appear overly derivative
- Distinguish common songwriting conventions from potentially significant similarities
- Evaluate originality within the context of contemporary music
- Document relevant observations clearly and consistently
Prompt & Creative Alignment
- Assess how effectively lyrics follow the requested theme, style, mood, or creative direction
- Review adherence to specific lyrical or musical instructions
- Evaluate consistency between intended genre and creative execution
- Identify deviations from requested tone, subject matter, structure, or format
- Assess whether creative choices feel intentional and musically appropriate
Language & Regional Expression
- Evaluate natural English usage across relevant regional contexts
- Assess slang, colloquial phrasing, cultural references, and idiomatic expression
- Identify wording that sounds unnatural or inappropriate for the intended audience
- Evaluate whether regional language is used credibly and consistently
- Apply cultural and linguistic judgement beyond literal grammatical correctness
Music & Genre Context
- Apply broad knowledge of contemporary genres, sub-genres, and artists
- Evaluate lyrics within their intended musical and cultural context
- Assess whether stylistic conventions are used effectively
- Identify genre mismatches or implausible creative choices
- Recognise contemporary songwriting trends and conventions
Comparative Quality Assessment
- Compare alternative lyrical or musical outputs against detailed quality standards
- Evaluate differences in creativity, originality, naturalness, and prompt adherence
- Distinguish substantive quality issues from subjective stylistic preferences
- Apply evaluation criteria consistently across assignments
- Provide clear reasoning for scoring and preference decisions
Structured Feedback
- Produce concise written assessments of reviewed material
- Clearly identify strengths, weaknesses, and specific quality issues
- Support evaluations with concrete observations from the content
- Follow detailed project instructions and evaluation standards
- Maintain consistency and attention to detail across repeated reviews
Ideal Profile
- Professional experience as a songwriter, lyricist, composer, performer, music journalist, or closely related music professional
- Strong command of written and spoken English
- Strong understanding of natural word choice, idiomatic language, slang, and regional expression
- Broad familiarity with contemporary music genres, sub-genres, and artists
- Ability to evaluate lyrical creativity, originality, and stylistic quality
- Headphones or studio monitors suitable for critical listening
- Formal training in music performance, theory, or composition is advantageous
- Credited or published songwriting work is highly valued
- Strong written communication and ability to provide precise, structured feedback
Engagement Details
- Part-time independent contractor engagement
- Fully remote
- Flexible commitment, with many contributors working approximately 20 hours per week
- No stated maximum weekly-hour limit
- Immediate start
- Project duration of up to approximately 6 months
- Compensation: $30–$55/hour
- Compensation may transition from hourly to task-based during the project while maintaining an equivalent effective hourly rate
- Work includes evaluation of English-language music and lyrics, originality review, comparative assessment, and structured written feedback
- Application may include a domain-expertise interview
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded based on project needs and performance
- Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, artist, or other third party
