Because MassDEP is presently working remotely, candidates will work remotely, until staff return to the office. Candidates will need a computer with Windows 10 and Office suite and will be expected to work on their own computers. Candidates will also need to have internet access as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be provided.

Agency Mission

The MASSDEP is a state agency responsible for protecting human health and the environment by ensuring clean air and water, the safe management and disposal of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. The MassDEP is one of the agencies in the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Job Description

Assist in collecting Massachusetts-specific hydrogeological and contaminated site data for modeling fate and transport of organic contaminants in soils and groundwater and input data into models.

Detailed Description

The project involves review of site assessment reports to collect hydrogeological and relevant data from contaminated sites. The data would be entered in Excel spreadsheets for statistical analysis. Data will then be used as inputs to models SESOIL and AT123D for predicting leaching of organic contaminants such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from unsaturated soils to groundwater. The model outputs will be used to support the derivation of screening values in residuals and soil cleanup standards for PFAS and other contaminants.

  • Familiar with environmental science, chemistry, geology, and basic statistics.
  • Good general computer skills
  • Comfortable in a Microsoft Windows environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel software for data entry.

Qualifications

  • Be enrolled in a degree program; or
  • Have received their degree within one year of their date of graduation date

This is an intern contracted position for up to 22.5 hours per week

$21.00 an hour/undergrad degree

$26.00 an hour/graduate degree

Employees must have the ability to commute to MassDEP Massachusetts locations.
