About the Role:

5RB are seeking a bright and motivated Junior Assistant to join their highly regarded clerking team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the beginning of their career to gain first-hand experience. They will work closely with experienced clerks and support barristers practising at the forefront of media and communications law, gaining valuable insight into the operation of Chambers and the work involved in high-profile legal matters.

The Junior Assistant plays an important role in supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the clerks' room and Chambers. Working closely with the Senior Clerk, Deputy Senior Clerk, Practice Managers and clerking team, you will assist with a range of clerking and administrative tasks that help ensure Chambers runs smoothly.

This is a varied role that offers exposure to the legal profession and opportunities to develop organisational, communication and professional skills within a supportive team environment.


Key Responsibilities:

Clerking Support

  • Assisting the clerking team with the smooth running of the clerks' room.
  • Delivering and collecting papers and case materials, including transporting boxes to and from court when required.
  • Liaising with barristers regarding the preparation of authorities bundles and other case materials.
  • Assisting with the entry of new instructions and issuing acknowledgements to solicitors.
  • Inputting completed work onto Chambers' time-recording system when required.
  • Printing and preparing emailed instructions and organising them into files for distribution.
  • Managing incoming and outgoing post, including opening, sorting and arranging collections.
  • Arranging courier collections when required.
  • Answering telephone calls and directing enquiries appropriately.
  • Greeting solicitors and clients attending Chambers for conferences.

General Office Support

  • Maintaining Chambers' library, including filing loose-leaf updates and keeping materials organised.
  • Monitoring and restocking office supplies such as stationery, refreshments and postage.
  • Preparing conference rooms for meetings and providing refreshments where required.
  • Assisting with general office upkeep, including dishwashers and shredding confidential papers.

Marketing Support

  • Assisting with marketing initiatives.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of positive relationships with clients and professional contacts.
  • Attending marketing events when required.


Required Skills

Candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable and keen to begin their career in a professional legal environment.

Candidates will ideally have GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English at grades A–C / 5–9.

  • The ability to work well both as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A willingness to learn and take initiative.
