Our client, 3 Verulam Buildings, is one of the UKs foremost sets of barristers chambers specialising in a wide range of commercial law, with 97 members in London and many prominent legal practitioners and associate members across the world.

Chambers currently seek a Finance Director to manage all aspects of the finance-related operations in chambers. As part of chambers senior management team, the role will include management of the Fees Manager and the Fees Administrators.

This is a senior level, challenging role that requires a broad depth of knowledge of both financial management and operations in the professional services sector.

Key responsibilities:

Finance

  • Staff Management: Management of Fees Manager & Fees Administrator(s)
  • Budget planning and preparation
  • Preparation of periodic financial management reports
  • Preparation of annual accounts for review, audit, and production of end-of-year accounts by Chambers accountants
  • Liaison with banks and other financial facility providers
  • Management and reconciliation of bank accounts and credit card accounts using Xero
  • Cash flow management
  • Management of payments from and to members of chambers (MOCs) received via the central fees account
  • Preparation of quarterly bills and financial statements on income and Chambers' contributions for MOCs)
  • Management of payments from and to MOCs via the central fees account
  • Preparation of draft VAT and draft EC Sales List information for MOCs
  • Payroll management (sub-contracted), including PAYE and provision of RTI and end-of-year returns to HMRC
  • Management, through brokers, of staff pension contributions/workplace pension scheme
  • Petty cash management
  • Management of AXA Health private medical group scheme

Person specification:

Essential:

  • University degree or equivalent level of qualification or substantive experience in a relevant field of business
  • Experience of working in the professional services sector
  • Understanding of the legal services sector
  • Experience of financial management
  • Understanding of financial and management accounting
  • Understanding of business accounting software
  • Understanding of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to analyse, plan and work under pressure
  • Ability to work independently
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with colleagues and clients
  • Desire to set an example for others
  • Positive attitude towards delivery and performance
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and diplomacy
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Integrity

Desirable but not essential:

  • ACCA / CIMA Accountancy qualification
  • Experience of working in barristers chambers
  • Experience of managing change
  • Understanding of Xero and Bar-Stat
  • Understanding of case management systems for barristers chambers (LEX)
