Our client, Crown Office Chambers, is recognised as one of the leading sets in the UK.

Owing to its continued growth and success, Chambers is increasing its clerking resource and wishes to recruit a Team Clerk to work under the current Senior Team Clerk of the Commercial and Construction Team- one of four major practice teams in Chambers. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 8 years desk clerking experience and will be currently working at Practice Manager level.

Strong and demonstrable knowledge and experience of clerking commercial work is required, including an aptitude for and evidence of business and practice development skills. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate they have the competencies set out for this role.

The Team Clerk is directly responsible to the Senior Team Clerk for duties including:

Practice and Diary Management in the Commercial and Construction Team

1. Dealing with professional enquiries about the experience and availability of relevant Members of Chambers to assist with the provision of legal advice and advocacy.

2. General diary management for Members in the Commercial and Construction team, including the booking in of appointments, checking of details for future appointments, and ensuring any paperwork deadlines are noted.

3. Overseeing and, when required, attending listing appointments.

4. Assisting the Senior Team Clerk with diary management and fee negotiation.

5. Supervising, directing generally and mentoring the Junior Team Clerk assigned to Construction and Commercial team and the Junior Clerks who support across all teams. Delegating work as appropriate.

6. Assisting with the entering of incoming papers, and (in liaison with the other practice managers) overseeing the management of the Chambers central Papers inbox.

7. Assisting all other members of the Staff Team to provide an excellent standard of service to members and their professional clients.

8. Maintaining good communications and provide appropriate support and cover in the event of the absence of colleagues.

9. Maintaining good and appropriate working relationships with colleagues in all the practice teams, members of Chambers, clients, officers of the Court and colleagues in other Chambers.


Practice Development

10. Develop a good knowledge of members practices, particularly those in the construction and commercial group and others with related practices and develop opportunities for those members.

11. Assist with Practice Development meetings for individuals and other meetings as appropriate including but not limited to preparation of information and statistics, participation and any follow up actions.

12. Attend Commercial and Construction Practice Group meetings; and assist with follow up actions in liaison with colleagues and members.

13. Working with the Commercial and Construction STC, developing and organising targeted business development activities for the Commercial and Construction Group and inter-group marketing and BD activities as appropriate.

14. Participating in other internal working groups and clerking development forums, where required.

Fees and Billing

15. Assisting with efficient billing of fees from the Lex time recording system.

16. Sending fee notes and invoices promptly according to Chambers policies

17. Working with Chambers Fees (credit control) team chasing any fees for members of chambers, as needed and liaising with colleagues as needed.

18. Agreeing fees for all junior members, and Silks where required, in liaison with the Senior Team Clerk.

Person specification Skills and Experience required

Essential

1. Ability to problem solve.

2. Ability to draft well-worded communications.

3. Minimum 8 years desk clerking experience.

4. Track record of producing and carrying out business development plans to secure commercial work.

5.Ability to lead, mentor, supervise and encourage more junior colleagues.

Desirable

6. Experience of Lex case management system.

7. Public Access trained.
