Key Responsibilities
- Liaising with those instructing as to the most appropriate counsel to deal with their case, having regard to the seriousness of the case, counsel's availability, experience and any potential conflicts of interest
- Liaising with courts as to listing and making requests as appropriate. To include liaising with any interested parties in respect of listings, for example where attempting to alter a fixed date it is imperative that all interested parties are consulted
- Agreeing fees as required and appropriate in conjunction with Senior Clerk/Practice Manager
- Keeping counsel and other clerks informed of any relevant diary alterations, potential clashes and diary issues
- Keeping those instructed informed of diary developments, eg, where a case is running longer than expected, as it is vital that affected parties are notified at the earliest possible opportunity
- Notifying other clerks (in particular the Senior Clerk) of cases that are likely to come into Chambers
- Crown Court Lists: assisting the Practice Manager to check the daily court lists and the re-allocation of work for the following day.
- Billing of all types of cases including both Defence and Prosecution Crown Court cases, Magistrates' Court cases and private fees. Monitoring reports to manage all unbilled cases and also working alongside the Finance Manager to liaise with solicitors over the payment of fees.
- Deputise for the other Clerks in their absences and cover essential aspects of their responsibilities in their absence
- Client Relationship Development and Management: contribute to the development of new business and the maintenance of good client relationships through direct contact with clients over the telephone, and at chambers marketing events
