Overview of the role
Our client, is a leading set of barristers chambers, specialising in commercial, public & regulatory, competition, sport, financial services and employment law. Based in the Temple, it has over 125 barrister members and 40+ staff members. Chambers is based in the Temple and has recently moved back into fully refurbished offices overlooking Middle Temple Gardens.
Applications are sought for a proactive, organised Junior Clerk to support the smooth running of clerking operations. This is a fast-paced role and an exciting opportunity to join Chambers dynamic Clerking Team.
Main Duties include:
- Assisting the Junior Clerking Team Leader with preparing and collecting papers for daily court runs, ensuring sufficient trolleys and equipment are ready.
- Keeping in regular contact with the Team Leader throughout the day, completing tasks promptly and professionally, and upholding Chambers standards.
- Attending court with members (as directed), collecting and delivering papers and
books as required. - Running errands as requested by the Junior Clerking Team Leader or clerking
team, including delivering hard copies to other chambers. - Learning the layout of the Royal Courts of Justice, the Rolls Building, as well as the locations of the various tribunals attended throughout London.
- When instructed, ensuring the lodging with the Court of all relevant court
documents (including written Skeleton Arguments), and the service or exchange of Skeleton Arguments with opponents as required in accordance with the relevant court/tribunal practice direction or as directed by barrister or a member of staff. - Taking shared responsibility for collecting incoming deliveries from Reception;
liaising to send urgent packages; distributing incoming documents to barristers at least every 30 minutes. - Notifying the Junior Clerking Team Leader or deputy of all newly delivered post. Follow confidentiality and information barrier procedures for all hand deliveries within Chambers.
- Understanding the Post Room function; providing cover as required, including
processes for post and DX collection and delivery. - Liaising with the Post Room for photocopying; operating copiers when Post
Room staff are unavailable; providing cover during peaks/leave; support
stationery stock checks; assisting with collecting papers and boxes for client
returns. - Coordinating with the Post Room on dispatch and retrieval of archived papers
and understanding the process. - Keeping corridors and shared areas clear, removing empty boxes/files from
outside rooms; assisting Post Room staff with this when asked. - With the support of the Librarian, preparing authorities bundles; obtaining law reports; using legal databases (with training) to locate cases;
collecting/distributing books and reports; returning library items; keeping library shelves tidy when the Librarian is away. - Monitoring printers in the clerks room and ensuring all machines are paper-filled at the end of each day.
- Answering telephones and taking accurate messages as required.
- Ensuring barristers pigeonholes remain accessible and not overfilled; maintaining a tidy clerks room at all times.
- Assisting with ordering lunches and other meals for barristers when needed and not handled by Housekeeping/Reception.
- Reporting promptly any error made and escalating immediately any issues, risks, or potential complaints to a Senior Clerk/s.
Person specification
The role is physically demanding and involves lifting boxes and pushing a trolley to and from court on a daily basis and in all weathers. Training in manual handling and lifting will be provided.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate, including through appropriate and relevant experience, that they can meet the following requirements:
- Proven ability to work effectively in a busy, physically demanding environment, including regular lifting and trolley movement in all weather conditions. .
- Strong organisation, reliability and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise multiple time-sensitive tasks.
- Team-oriented, proactive approach with clear, confident communication and
professional presentation. - Commitment to quality client service and to maintaining confidentiality and

- IT literacy, with a willingness to learn Chambers systems and legal processes.
Training will be provided on bespoke platforms and legal databases.
Contract Terms
- Core hours: 8:15-18:00 or 9:15-19:00 on a rota basis, with occasional overtime.
- 22 days annual leave plus public holidays; limit of one weeks leave during legal term time.
