Ability Advocates is partnering with Inner West Council to offer a supported 12‑month traineeship for people with disability who are passionate about working outdoors and contributing to their community. This role forms part of our Quarter 1, 2026 Inclusive Traineeship Intake, combining paid employment, formal training and personalised support.

About Our Inclusive Traineeship Program

Our traineeships provide:

  • Paid employment from day one
  • A nationally recognised Certificate III in Horticulture

We run quarterly intakes across multiple industries, offering regular opportunities to begin supported employment.

Eligibility — For People with Disability

This traineeship is exclusively for people with disability, including long‑term:
Autism, ADHD, mental health conditions, learning differences, intellectual disability, mobility limitations, neurological conditions, sensory impairments and chronic health conditions.

One form of evidence is required, such as:

  • NDIS Plan or Access Letter
  • Treating practitioner/allied health report
  • Disability Support Pension evidence
  • School/education disability verification
    (or any document confirming functional impact for 12+ months)

About the Role - Horticulture Trainee (Inner West Council)

This role offers rewarding, hands-on horticultural experience while maintaining and enhancing public spaces across the Inner West. You will work outdoors as part of a supportive maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Services

  • Maintain sports fields, turf wickets and garden beds
  • Perform mowing, planting, mulching, watering and fertilising
  • Undertake general grounds and street cleaning tasks
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides safely

Horticultural & Landscaping Support

  • Assist with landscape maintenance and improvement projects
  • Follow daily schedules and task instructions accurately

Planning & Equipment Care

  • Interpret and action instructions from maintenance teams
  • Clean and maintain tools, trucks and plant equipment

Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Adhere to Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) procedures
  • Follow council environmental and operational guidelines
  • Maintain safe practices for yourself, the team and community

Key Attributes (Selection Criteria)

You will be a great fit if you have:

  • A willingness to complete a Certificate III in Horticulture
  • A genuine interest in horticulture and outdoor work
  • Physical capacity for bending, lifting, walking and repetitive tasks
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude
  • Professional presentation with community and stakeholders
  • Willingness to learn WHS and environmental procedures
