Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Kennel Attendant to join the Guide Dogs team and ensure the wellbeing of dogs in our Breeding Centre and Training Kennels. This role involves providing high-quality care to dogs, maintaining a hygienic kennel environment, and ensuring the physical and emotional welfare of all assigned dogs.
Key Responsibilities
Dog Care and Wellbeing
- Manage the general wellbeing of dogs by feeding, watering, toileting, bathing, and grooming them as needed.
- Monitor and supervise the behaviour of kennelled dogs, applying appropriate handling techniques and preventing noise disturbances.
- Accurately monitor and record the weight and body condition of dogs, recommending dietary changes to trainers or team leaders when necessary.
Veterinary Care Support
- Assist with veterinary care by managing and implementing health treatment plans for individual dogs.
- Maintain accurate health records for all dogs in the kennel, ensuring proper documentation of medical treatments and observations.
Transport and Liaison
- Safely transport dogs to and from puppy raisers, trainers, clients, Guide Dog Mobility Instructors (GDMI), and Puppy Development Advisors (PDA).
- Liaise professionally with staff to communicate specific care requirements for individual dogs.
Kennel Maintenance and Hygiene
- Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of all kennel areas, including associated equipment, in line with organisational policies and procedures.
- Actively cooperate with Guide Dog Trainers and Instructors to meet the unique needs of each dog.
Selection Criteria
Essential Skills and Attributes
- Genuine passion for animal care and the ability to manage the physical and emotional needs of dogs.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in monitoring and recording health data.
- Ability to work collaboratively with trainers, veterinarians, and other team members.
Physical Requirements
- Physically fit and capable of performing tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Communication Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
Other Requirements
- Knowledge of dog handling techniques and a willingness to learn and implement best practices.
- Familiarity with kennel hygiene standards and procedures.
- Commitment to maintaining a secure and safe environment for all animals and staff.
