About the job Lab Assistant in Organic Chemistry
ACT (the American College of Thessaloniki), the tertiary division of Anatolia College, is seeking Organic Chemistry Lab Assistant(s). The position is a temporary part-time assignment (September 2025 December 2025) and may be renewable upon agreement of all parties.
We are seeking a detail-oriented Lab Assistant to support organic chemistry laboratory operations. The Lab Assistant will help with the preparation and execution of experiments, maintenance of chemical inventories and equipment, and enforcement of safety protocols. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a background or strong interest in organic chemistry who are looking to gain hands-on lab experience in an academic setting. The Organic Chemistry Lab Assistant can carry a teaching load of 1 up to 3 courses per term, with demonstrated expertise and experience in laboratory teaching in the area of Organic Chemistry, and participate in the activities of the Division and the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare reagents, solutions, and glassware for organic chemistry experiments.
- Assist in setting up and cleaning up lab stations before and after experimental sessions
- Conduct basic laboratory tasks such as measuring, mixing, distilling, filtering, and titrating
- Maintain accurate records of chemical usage, experimental results, and lab notes
- Monitor and replenish chemical and equipment inventory; ensure proper labeling and storage of chemicals
- Assist in the maintenance and calibration of instruments such as rotary evaporators, IR spectrometers, and chromatography equipment
Support disposal procedures for organic waste and used solvents
- Ensure that lab safety rules are followed at all times, including the proper chemical handling procedures.
- Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative technologies, methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
- Use a variety of teaching methods and materials, appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles that assist them in meeting course objectives.
- Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives, and inform them of their progress in the course in a timely manner.
- Keep accurate student records and submit related reports and forms within requested timelines.
Learn and apply technologies that support student learning.
Participate in discipline committee or program meetings and activities.
- Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula and practices to assure compliance with professional standards, and requirements of business/industry, and higher education.
Qualifications
Educational Background
- Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry or closely related field is required.
- Candidates holding a Master’s degree in the discipline will be considered but preference will be given to those who hold a Doctoral degree in Chemistry or closely related discipline.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Familiarity with basic organic chemistry techniques and lab equipment
Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
- Experience with current best practices in Chemistry lecture and lab instruction
Fluency in English (verbal and written)
Good organizational, communication, and time management skills
Ability to follow complex instructions and adhere to safety protocols
- Leadership experience in an educational environment with sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities
Ability to work in a diverse work environment
Willingness and ability to teach day or evening classes
Knowledge and skill in a variety of computer usage and software
- Ability to inspire and motivate students in a student-centered environment
Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with and effectively manage a diverse professional, community and student population
Teaching/Professional Experience
A minimum of one year of university/college level teaching experience or other relevant work experience is required. University/college level teaching experience at a US Accredited higher education institution is preferred.
