Senior Migration Expert (COBOL to Java)

We build and manage remote operational support and development teams, while also supporting our freelance collaborators during their journey.

We are looking for a Senior Migration Expert (COBOL to Java) who can work both strategically and hands-on. The role focuses on the migration of COBOL batch applications to modern Java-based solutions and requires someone who proactively contributes ideas, improves approaches, and supports internal developer teams through structured knowledge transfer.

Responsibilities

• Active and independent implementation of the migration from existing COBOL batch applications to Java-based solutions
• Analysis, evaluation, and continuous optimization of the migration strategy regarding tools, methods, risks, and performance
• Assessment of architecture compliance to ensure that migrated components follow modern standards and best practices
• Detailed analysis of COBOL business logic to secure functional equivalence in the Java implementation
• Code reviews and knowledge transfer for internal teams on COBOL legacy systems and the new Java architecture
• Creation and maintenance of technical documentation for migration processes, source systems, and target systems

Requirements

• Deep knowledge of COBOL, including JCL, VSAM, DB2 or CICS, and batch processing concepts
• Proven expertise in modern Java development, ideally Java 8 or newer, Spring Framework, Spring Batch, JPA, or Hibernate
• Several years of experience in legacy system migration, ideally COBOL to Java
• Experience with refactoring techniques, migration automation tools, and test automation
• Strong database experience with relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL
• Strong analytical abilities, proactive, and solution-oriented approach
• Excellent communication skills in German and/or English
