Senior Grooming Artist (Houdini)

Overview:

Able & Baker is looking for a highly skilled Senior Grooming Artist with a strong eye for detail and style to join our team on an upcoming 3D animated feature film. Youll be responsible for creating expressive and production-ready hair, fur, and feather grooms in Houdini, working closely with modeling, CFX, and look development teams to define the visual language of character and creature grooming..

Responsibilities:

• Create hair, fur and feathers for stylized and semi-realistic characters in houdini

• Contribute to the development and refinement of the project's grooming visual language and style guidelines.

• Ensure grooming assets are optimized and integrated smoothly into the pipeline

• Contribute to grooming standards, documentation, and best practices

• Provide mentorship or feedback to junior groomers when needed

• Participate in grooming reviews and artistic feedback cycles
  

Required Skills and Experience:

• 5+ years in grooming for 3D feature films or high-end VFX productions

• Expert knowledge of Houdini grooming tools and workflows

• Ability to interpret and stylize character designs creatively and effectively.

• Strong artistic knowledge in shape, flow, silhouette and storytelling through groom.

• Solid understanding of hair/fur dynamics, look-dev integration, and pipeline processes

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively in a team environment

• A groom-focused reel or portfolio showcasing stylized or semi-realistic character work
  
  

Bonus Skills (NICE TO HAVE):

• Experience grooming feathers

• Familiarity integrating grooming assets within USD/Solaris workflows in a Houdini-based pipeline.

• Python or VEX scripting for tool development and automation
