Job Title:

1st Assistant Engineer (First Engineer)

Department: Engine Department

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Vessel Type: Commercial Vessel (e.g. Bulk Carrier, Container Ship, Tanker)

Location: Onboard / Global Operations

Job Purpose:

The 1st Assistant Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in managing and maintaining the ships engine department operations. Responsible for day-to-day technical operations, supervision of junior engineers, and maintenance of main and auxiliary machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain propulsion systems, auxiliary engines, generators, and related machinery.
  • Supervise 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Engineers, as well as engine ratings during watch or maintenance activities.
  • Implement and monitor the ships Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Ensure machinery is running efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations.
  • Carry out daily checks and inspections on critical equipment including fuel systems, lubrication systems, and pumps.
  • Monitor bunker consumption and assist in fuel transfers or bunkering operations.
  • Assist Chief Engineer in dry-docking preparation, technical reports, and ordering spare parts.
  • Record engine room data in logs and reports.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency response, and safety meetings.

Requirements:

  • Certificate of Competency: STCW Reg III/2 Second Engineer (Unlimited)
  • Valid STCW safety training and certificates: Basic Training, Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid, etc.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as 2nd or 3rd Engineer on commercial vessels.
  • Proficient knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and vessel maintenance routines.
  • Good leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience on similar vessel type (e.g. Container / Tanker / Bulk Carrier).
  • Familiarity with safety, environmental, and operational standards (ISM, MARPOL, SOLAS).
  • Hands-on experience with PMS systems and troubleshooting machinery.
