Job Purpose:
The Oiler assists in the operation and maintenance of the ships engine room machinery by performing routine lubrication, cleaning, and monitoring tasks. This role supports the engineering team in ensuring smooth, efficient, and safe mechanical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lubricate and clean main engine, auxiliary engines, pumps, compressors, and other machinery as scheduled.
- Assist engineers during watchkeeping duties and maintenance routines.
- Monitor oil levels, temperature, and pressure gauges; report any abnormalities to the watch engineer.
- Operate bilge and ballast pumps under supervision.
- Perform regular engine room rounds to check for leaks, vibrations, or irregularities.
- Assist in bunkering operations and oil transfer procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the engine room and workshop areas.
- Support emergency drills and comply with ship safety procedures.
Requirements:
- Valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate
- Certificate of Proficiency as Engine Rating (STCW Reg III/4 or equivalent)
- Seafarers Medical Certificate
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in the engine room (preferably as a Wiper or Oiler)
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and safety practices
Preferred:
- Previous sea service as Oiler or similar rating
- Familiar with safe working practices and pollution prevention (MARPOL)
- Ability to work effectively in a team and follow instructions from engineers
