Location: Onboard / Global Operations
Job Purpose:
The Ordinary Seaman (OS) is an entry-level deck rating who assists the deck crew in ship maintenance, mooring, cargo handling, and general seamanship duties. The OS works under the supervision of the Bosun and officers and is gaining experience toward qualifying as an Able Seaman.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with cleaning, chipping, painting, and greasing decks, bulkheads, and other external parts of the ship.
- Support mooring and unmooring operations by handling lines and fenders.
- Assist in cargo operations under direction from senior deck crew.
- Participate in navigational watch as lookout or helmsman trainee under supervision.
- Help with the maintenance of deck machinery and safety equipment.
- Take part in safety drills and emergency procedures.
- Follow instructions from the Bosun and Officers regarding safety and daily work plans.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in work areas and crew accommodation.
Requirements:
- Valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate
- Seamans Book and valid Medical Certificate
- Physically fit and capable of performing manual labor in varying weather conditions
- Willingness to learn and take direction
- Basic knowledge of seamanship and safety practices
Preferred:
- Graduation from a maritime vocational school or previous experience as a deck cadet or trainee
- Strong work ethic, discipline, and teamwork attitude
- Intention to pursue qualification as Able Seaman (AB)
