Location: Onboard / International Waters

Job Purpose:

The Third Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of specific machinery and systems onboard under the supervision of the Second Engineer. This position plays a key role in supporting the safe and efficient running of the engine room.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain assigned machinery, typically including generators, fuel systems, purifiers, compressors, and pumps.
  • Assist in daily engine room operations and machinery checks during watches.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the engine room and machinery spaces.
  • Record readings and keep engine room logs during watchkeeping duties.
  • Conduct routine maintenance tasks in line with the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Support bunkering operations under supervision.
  • Report machinery malfunctions or abnormalities to the Second Engineer.
  • Participate in safety drills and emergency procedures as required by the vessels Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Comply with all environmental, safety, and operational standards and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Certificate of Competency: STCW Reg III/1 Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW)
  • Valid STCW training certificates (Basic Safety Training, Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid, etc.)
  • Minimum of 612 months of seagoing experience as a Junior Engineer or Engine Cadet.
  • Good understanding of marine diesel engines, pumps, purifiers, and auxiliary systems.
  • Familiar with safety protocols and pollution prevention (MARPOL).

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in the same rank on similar vessel types.
  • Knowledge of Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) and electronic engine control systems.
  • Strong teamwork, responsibility, and discipline.
