Position: Ship Doctor (Cruise Ship)

Employer: Royal Caribbean Group

Location: Onboard Cruise Ship (Worldwide Deployment)

Start: Upon Completion of Selection, Credentialing & Medical Clearance


Job Summary:

The Ship Doctor is the senior medical professional onboard and is responsible for providing high-quality healthcare to guests and crew. The Doctor oversees the operation of the ships medical center, delivers emergency and routine care, and ensures compliance with international maritime medical standards and Royal Caribbeans policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide general and emergency medical care to both guests and crew
  • Lead the medical team onboard and supervise nurses and medical secretaries
  • Stabilize and coordinate evacuations in case of serious illness or injury
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records
  • Perform pre-employment medical exams and routine health assessments for crew
  • Ensure proper storage, usage, and documentation of medications and supplies
  • Maintain medical center hygiene and readiness for emergencies
  • Report infectious diseases and public health issues per protocol (including COVID-19 or norovirus outbreaks)
  • Liaise with shore-side medical support and port agents as needed

Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree (MD or equivalent) and valid license to practice
  • Minimum 3 years of post-graduate clinical experience in emergency medicine, general practice, or internal medicine
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications
  • Previous cruise ship or remote area medical experience preferred
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • Proficient in using electronic medical records and Microsoft Office
  • STCW and Crowd Management certifications (can be arranged pre-joining)

  • Confident and calm under pressure, able to make independent clinical decisions
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Able to work in an international, multicultural environment
  • Open to extended time at sea (typically 34 month contracts)
