Job Purpose:

The Fourth Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of designated machinery and systems under the guidance of senior engineers. This position is often a junior-level officer role and serves as a key step for progression in the engine department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain assigned machinery such as purifiers, air compressors, fresh water generators, and pumps.
  • Assist in engine room watchkeeping duties and routine inspections.
  • Record machinery parameters and report any abnormalities to senior engineers.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks under supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in assigned workspaces and machinery areas.
  • Assist with bunkering and oil transfer operations as required.
  • Support safety drills and emergency response operations.
  • Adhere to the vessels Safety Management System (SMS) and environmental compliance standards.

Requirements:

  • Certificate of Competency: STCW Reg III/1 Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW)
  • Valid STCW training certificates (Basic Training, Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid, etc.)
  • Minimum of 612 months of sea time as an Engine Cadet or Junior Engineer.
  • Basic knowledge of shipboard systems including auxiliary machinery and safety systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn under supervision.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with PMS (Planned Maintenance System) and engine room management software.
  • Prior experience on similar vessel type preferred (e.g. bulk, container, or tanker).
  • Good teamwork, discipline, and adaptability in multicultural environments.
