Job Purpose:

The Messman assists the Chief Cook and galley team by performing cleaning, food service, and housekeeping duties. This role ensures cleanliness and hygiene in the galley, mess room, and crew living areas, contributing to the crews health and well-being onboard.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up dining tables and serve meals to officers and crew in the mess room.
  • Clean and maintain the mess room, galley, and pantry areas before and after meals.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, kitchen tools, and maintain proper storage.
  • Assist the Chief Cook in basic food preparation and ingredient handling.
  • Clean crew cabins and common areas (if assigned) including changing linens, disposing of trash, and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and inform Cook or Steward when replenishment is needed.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
  • Participate in safety drills and emergency duties as assigned on the muster list.

Requirements:

  • STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate
  • Valid Seamans Book and Medical Certificate
  • Good personal hygiene and physical condition
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team
  • Willingness to work long hours, including weekends and holidays, as per ship schedule

Preferred:

  • Previous experience onboard as Messman or in housekeeping/food service roles
  • Knowledge of food handling, hygiene, and sanitation procedures
  • Experience working in multicultural crew environments
  • Ability to speak basic English for communication
