Job Purpose:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of the vessels engine department, including propulsion, auxiliary machinery, and all technical equipment onboard.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage all engineering operations, including main engine, generators, auxiliary systems, and fuel systems.
  • Lead and supervise engine department staff: Second Engineer, Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrical Officer, and Ratings.
  • Plan and implement maintenance schedules in accordance with the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Monitor and maintain critical systems such as ballast water, bilge, HVAC, sewage treatment, and fire-fighting systems.
  • Ensure vessel compliance with all applicable flag state, classification society, IMO, and company safety and environmental policies.
  • Maintain updated and accurate engine logbooks, reports, and records.
  • Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, lubricants, and fuel onboard.
  • Participate in safety drills and emergency response operations as per SMS (Safety Management System).
  • Coordinate with shore-based technical teams for repairs, inspections, drydock planning, and audits.
  • Conduct training and mentoring for junior engineers and cadets onboard.

Requirements:

  • Certificate of Competency: STCW Reg III/2 Chief Engineer (Unlimited)
  • Valid STCW certificates: Basic Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, etc.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as Second Engineer or at least 1 year as Chief Engineer on commercial vessels.
  • Excellent knowledge of shipboard machinery, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in using PMS and electronic engine management systems.

Preferred:

  • Experience on similar vessel type (e.g. Tanker / Container / Bulk Carrier).
  • Knowledge of MARPOL, ISM Code, and environmental compliance.
  • Familiarity with Class inspections and Port State Control procedures.
