Location: Onboard / Global Operations
Job Purpose:
The Able Seaman is a qualified deck rating responsible for performing a wide range of seamanship duties, including ship maintenance, cargo handling, mooring operations, and navigational watch support, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Stand navigational watches as lookout or helmsman under officer supervision.
- Assist with mooring and unmooring operations, anchoring, and towing.
- Perform maintenance work including painting, chipping, greasing, and cleaning of deck areas and equipment.
- Operate deck machinery and equipment such as winches, cranes, windlasses, and lifeboats.
- Handle cargo gear and assist in cargo operations when required.
- Secure and lash cargo as per instructions.
- Participate in safety drills, emergency procedures, and routine inspections.
- Report any hazards or unsafe conditions to the Bosun or Officer on Watch.
- Follow all safety, environmental, and operational procedures onboard.
Requirements:
- Certificate of Proficiency as Able Seaman (STCW II/5 or national equivalent)
- Valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate
- Seafarer Medical Certificate (e.g., ENG1 or equivalent)
- Experience in watchkeeping and shipboard operations
- Basic knowledge of seamanship, rigging, cargo handling, and safety procedures
Preferred:
- Previous experience on similar commercial vessels (e.g. container, tanker, or bulk carriers)
- Familiarity with ISM Code, MARPOL, SOLAS, and safety protocols
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and follow instructions clearly
