Location: Onboard / International Operations

Job Purpose:

The Fitter is responsible for performing metalwork, fabrication, and repair tasks within the engine room and other parts of the vessel. This includes welding, cutting, and machining to support the maintenance and repair of shipboard systems and structures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform welding (arc, gas, TIG/MIG) and cutting tasks as required for structural repairs, pipelines, tanks, and machinery components.
  • Fabricate and install metal brackets, supports, and foundations for machinery and systems.
  • Operate lathes, grinders, drills, and other workshop tools and equipment.
  • Assist engineers with overhauling and repairing machinery such as pumps, valves, pipelines, and heat exchangers.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance and repairs according to the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety in the workshop and engine room work areas.
  • Ensure all hot work complies with safety protocols including issuing of hot work permits and use of protective equipment.
  • Support emergency and breakdown repairs during vessel operation.
  • Maintain inventory of workshop tools, materials, and welding supplies.

Requirements:

  • Valid STCW Basic Safety Training Certificate
  • Seafarers Medical Certificate
  • Certified welder or mechanical trade qualification (preferred)
  • Experience working in engine rooms or shipyards as a fitter/welder
  • Knowledge of marine welding techniques, safety procedures, and workshop tools

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a Fitter on similar vessel types (e.g., bulk carrier, tanker, container ship)
  • Familiarity with shipboard safety systems and emergency procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and piping diagrams
  • Strong work ethic, discipline, and ability to work independently or in a team
