Job Title:
Electro-Technical Officer (ETO)
Department: Engine Department
Reports to: Chief Engineer
Vessel Type: Commercial Vessel (e.g. Container Ship, Bulk Carrier, Tanker)
Location: Onboard / Worldwide Operations
Job Purpose:
The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of all electrical, electronic, and automation systems onboard. This includes power distribution, control systems, navigation equipment, and safety-related electronics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all electrical and electronic equipment including:
- Main and auxiliary generators
- Switchboards and power distribution
- Navigation and communication systems
- Automation systems and engine control systems
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Lighting, lifts, and HVAC systems
- Perform routine inspections and testing of safety-critical systems.
- Assist the Chief Engineer in planning and executing electrical maintenance in the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Monitor and manage power generation and energy usage onboard.
- Keep records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory of electrical spares.
- Ensure compliance with international regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code) and classification society requirements.
- Assist in preparing for port inspections and audits (PSC, Vetting, Class surveys).
- Support safety drills and act as part of the emergency response team.
Requirements:
- Certificate of Competency (CoC): STCW Reg III/6 Electro-Technical Officer
- Valid STCW certificates: Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid, etc.
- At least 12 years of experience as an ETO or Electrical Engineer on a commercial vessel.
- Strong knowledge of marine electrical systems, electronics, automation, and control systems.
- Ability to read technical diagrams, use diagnostic tools, and operate safely in high-voltage environments.
Preferred:
- Experience with modern automation systems and energy efficiency technologies.
- Familiarity with Class and Flag requirements for electrical installations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in English for technical communication and reporting.
