The Opportunity

Our client, a well-established organisation operating within a highly regulated environment, is seeking an experienced Database and Infrastructure Engineer to join its Technology function on a 12-month fixed-term contract (FTC).

This is a hands-on technical role combining advanced SQL development, database engineering and administration, data integration, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, administering and optimising secure, resilient and high-performing database and data solutions supporting critical business operations, management information, reporting and digital services.

The role requires someone who is equally comfortable working with traditional enterprise database environments and modern Microsoft data technologies, with the ability to operate effectively within a demanding production environment.

Key Responsibilities

Database Design & SQL Development

  • Design, develop and maintain relational database structures, schemas, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, functions and triggers.
  • Write, test, review and optimise complex T-SQL and, where required, PL/SQL for applications, integrations and reporting workloads.
  • Develop robust data models and reusable database components that support accuracy, scalability and maintainability.
  • Support application teams with database requirements, release scripts, source control and database deployment automation.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate database development and coding standards.

Database Administration, Performance & Resilience

  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade and administer Microsoft SQL Server environments.
  • Support Oracle database environments where applicable.
  • Monitor database availability, capacity and performance and proactively identify potential issues.
  • Diagnose bottlenecks and optimise queries, execution plans, indexes and database configurations.
  • Implement and test backup, restore, high-availability and disaster-recovery arrangements.
  • Provide production support, incident resolution, root-cause analysis and problem management for database and data-service issues.
  • Help ensure database environments remain secure, resilient and highly available.

Data Integration & Microsoft Fabric

  • Develop, operate and monitor ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines.
  • Work with SQL Server Integration Services, Microsoft Fabric Data Factory, dataflows and related technologies.
  • Ingest, cleanse, transform and reconcile structured and semi-structured data from multiple enterprise and third-party systems.
  • Design and support Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse and Warehouse solutions using technologies including OneLake, Delta Lake and SQL analytics endpoints.
  • Support modern data architectures, including medallion architecture and curated data products.
  • Use T-SQL and, where appropriate, Spark SQL, Python or notebooks to prepare data for analytics and reporting.
  • Implement appropriate data-quality controls, metadata, lineage and reconciliation processes.

Power BI & Reporting

  • Develop and maintain Power BI semantic models, dashboards and reports supporting operational, management and reporting requirements.
  • Build efficient data models, relationships, measures and calculations using DAX and Power Query.
  • Optimise data refresh performance, gateways and DirectQuery or Direct Lake connectivity.
  • Implement appropriate row-level security and access controls.
  • Work with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into accurate, governed and reusable data solutions.

Security, Governance & Infrastructure Support

  • Implement least-privilege access, database roles, encryption, auditing, masking and appropriate privileged-access controls.
  • Protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of organisational data.
  • Support database infrastructure and associated services within a secure and controlled technology environment.
  • Maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, support procedures and architecture records.
  • Follow established SDLC, change, release and configuration-management processes.
  • Support operational resilience, disaster recovery and technology-control requirements.
  • Work closely with application, infrastructure, cybersecurity, data and business teams.
  • Provide technical input and supporting evidence for internal and external assurance activities.
