Principal Engineer - Switchyard

OVERVIEW

Join a leading team in the renewable energy sector as a Principal Engineer specialized in Switchyard design and implementation. In this role, you'll guide critical high-voltage switchyard projects from conception through commissioning, ensuring compliance with industry standards while implementing innovative solutions for renewable energy infrastructure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead switchyard projects from conceptual design through construction and commissioning

  • Provide technical oversight and training to external engineers of record (EOR)

  • Develop engineering requirements and scope documentation for early-stage projects

  • Secure and manage engineering consulting resources through approved supplier networks

  • Coordinate with transmission owners on switchyard site development and technical requirements

  • Source, select, and contract essential services including geotechnical, survey, and engineering

  • Represent engineering interests in project meetings with various levels of management

  • Review interconnection documentation including system impact and reactive/harmonic studies

  • Manage long-lead material orders to minimize delays and budget overruns

  • Support commissioning activities and collaborate with OEMs to enhance design integration

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil/Structural Engineering

  • 7+ years experience in substation design and engineering of high-voltage substations/switchyards

  • Strong project engineering and/or project management experience

  • In-depth knowledge of IEEE, NESC, ASCE and other applicable industry codes and standards

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities

  • Ability to travel within North America as required

  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification or PMP preferred
