Opportunity: Join a critical project with a leading renewable energy developer. This is a hands-on, on-site contract role for an experienced commissioning professional to oversee utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) commissioning activities.

Overview

Our client is a leading force in the renewable energy sector, developing and deploying cutting-edge power generation and storage solutions. We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Supervisor for a 12-month contract to play a key role in the field commissioning and startup of a major utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. You will be responsible for supervising on-site commissioning activities, ensuring safety, quality, and schedule adherence, and acting as a critical liaison between the field team and project management.

This is a site-based position requiring strong technical leadership and hands-on problem-solving skills in a dynamic construction/commissioning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily field commissioning activities for the BESS project, including installation support, pre-functional checks, functional performance testing, and integrated system startup.
  • Ensure all field work is performed in strict compliance with site safety plans, procedures, and Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) protocols.
  • Review and enforce commissioning test procedures, checklists, and quality standards.
  • Act as the primary on-site point of contact for commissioning issues, providing technical guidance to technicians and contractors.
  • Track and report daily progress, test results, punch list items, and schedule status to the Commissioning Manager and project leadership.
  • Manage commissioning documentation, including test records, red-line markups, and turnover packages.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, and equipment vendor teams to resolve technical issues and ensure seamless system integration.
  • Support the training and oversight of entry-level commissioning coordinators or technicians assigned to the project.
  • Participate in pre-commissioning meetings, safety briefings, and daily coordination meetings.

Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years of direct, hands-on experience in commissioning, startup, and testing of utility-scale power generation, transmission, or industrial electrical systems. Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is highly preferred.
  • Education: Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent military or trade experience may be considered.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of medium/high-voltage electrical systems, protection relays, SCADA/controls, inverters, and utility interconnection processes.
  • Safety: Proven track record of enforcing rigorous safety standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E) in a field construction/industrial environment. Must be able to perform and audit LOTO.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience supervising contractors or technicians in the field.
  • Documentation: Proficient with commissioning documentation, test reports, and project tracking tools.
  • Travel & Location: Must be available for travel to project sites as needed.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing project needs.

Contract Benefits

  • Project Impact: Work on a high-visibility, critical infrastructure project in the fast-growing renewable energy storage sector.
  • Professional Growth: Gain specialized experience with cutting-edge BESS technology.
  • Structured Engagement: Clear contract with defined scope and deliverables.
  • Industry Leader: Partner with a premier developer in the energy space.
