Teaching Context

Located in the Karst plateau overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this non-profit organization serves the local and expatriate communities of Trieste and its surrounding areas. A thirty-minute commute from the city center and just ninety minutes east of Venice, IST educates around 370 students from Early Childhood through High School. Teaching Requirements
Teaching students aged 11-14, the successful candidate will be responsible for Science instruction to mixed-ability classes in Grades 6-9. A typical teaching day may include lessons with students from across this age range as well as Advisory and Supervising Duties. Teachers are encouraged to lead or participate in annual residential trips in Italy and around Europe.
The primary role of the Middle School Science Teacher is to prepare students in the Middle School and Grade 9 for continuing study in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The Middle School program prepares students in Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics while following a general key stage 3 curriculum blending into a foundational GCSE level program. This teacher works in close collaboration with the Grades 10-13 Science Teacher as well.
The successful applicant will:
- demonstrate curricular knowledge and developmental awareness of students needs;
- follow the written curriculum of the school;
- contribute to the periodic review and development of the curricular program;
- use clear, logical and integrated instructional plans to align content and to deliver appropriate material based on group and individual needs;
- collaborate in the management of the lab inventory;
- lead the planning of and preparation for approved practicals;
- establish a climate of trust and respect in which students can safely take positive risks;
- communicate clearly, efficiently and responsibly with students, parents and colleagues;
- maintain the expected level of professionalism in appearance, demeanor and comportment;
- collect data to determine student achievement goals in September and the progress of those goals throughout the school year.
The successful candidate will also be expected to further develop and maintain academic links with Triestes international science community, such as the International Center for Theoretical Physics and the AREA Science Park.
In addition to these duties, the Middle School Science Teacher is also a House Advisor as part of ISTs House System. This responsibility involves supporting activities and competitions during 30-minute Advisory periods at the end of each day and providing campus supervision during lunch times and recess. IST employs a cover teacher to assist during teacher absences; however, teachers also complete cover when colleagues are absent or leading a residential trip.
