About the job Assistant Controller-Construction
Arkansas Talent Group is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller-Construction with a strong background in construction accounting to join our mid-to-large size construction company ($100M+ annual revenue). The ideal candidate will have 5-8+ years of progressive construction accounting experience, a bachelor's degree in accounting, and a deep understanding of job costing, contract management, and percentage of completion accounting. This role supports the Controller in all accounting functions related to construction projects, providing leadership over financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and compliance within a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee construction accounting operations, including job costing, contract accounting, change orders, subcontractor payments, and percentage of completion reporting.
- Assist with the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP and industry standards.
- Monitor and reconcile job costs, general ledger accounts, accounts payable and receivable, and inventory specific to construction projects.
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes, working closely with project managers and executive leadership to track project profitability and cost control.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of internal controls, policies, and procedures specific to construction accounting.
- Lead and mentor staff within the accounting department, providing guidance and oversight to ensure efficient workflow and professional growth.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project management, procurement, and operations to ensure accurate and timely financial information.
- Participate in financial audits, prepare audit schedules, and liaise with external auditors as needed.
- Utilize construction-specific accounting software and tools (e.g., ProCore, Sage 100, or equivalent) and advanced Excel skills to analyze data and create financial reports and trend analyses.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies, maintaining strong ethical standards and confidentiality.
- Support treasury functions, including cash flow monitoring, bank reconciliations, and management of loan and bonding requirements relevant to construction projects.
- May require occasional travel to project sites and company locations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting. CPA designation preferred but not mandatory.
- 5-8+ years of hands-on construction accounting experience within a mid to large-sized construction company (preferably $40-100M+ annual revenue).
- In-depth knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, percentage of completion, contract management, and cost allocations.
- Strong understanding of GAAP as it relates to construction and real estate development.
- Proven experience managing or supporting month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience supervising accounting personnel.
- Proficiency with construction accounting software and advanced Excel skills for financial modeling and analysis.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Detail-oriented, ethical, and proactive in identifying and resolving issues.
- Ability and willingness to travel as required.
