Job Description: Head/Vice President of Climate Sustainability and Environment

Position Summary

The Vice President of Climate Sustainability and Environment will lead our strategic initiatives to address climate change, environmental sustainability, and resilience across our organization and programs. This senior leadership role will drive our climate action agenda, strengthen our environmental impact, and position Development Alternatives as a thought leader in sustainable development solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive climate and environmental sustainability strategy aligned with organizational goals and global frameworks (Paris Agreement, SDGs)
  • Lead cross-functional teams in integrating climate considerations into all programs and operations
  • Represent the organization in high-level forums, conferences, and policy discussions related to climate change and environmental sustainability
  • Build strategic partnerships with governments, international organizations, private sector, and civil society to advance climate action

Program Development and Implementation

  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of climate-focused programs and projects
  • Guide the integration of climate resilience and adaptation strategies into existing development initiatives
  • Lead the development of innovative climate finance mechanisms and business models
  • Establish metrics, monitoring frameworks, and evaluation systems to track environmental impact

Research and Knowledge Management

  • Direct research initiatives related to climate change, environmental sustainability, and resilience
  • Oversee the development of knowledge products, case studies, and best practices
  • Foster a culture of learning and knowledge sharing within the organization
  • Contribute to thought leadership through publications, presentations, and participation in expert panels

Resource Mobilization and Partnerships

  • Identify and secure funding opportunities from diverse sources (bilateral/multilateral donors, private foundations, corporate partners)
  • Develop compelling proposals and concepts for climate finance and environmental initiatives
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, donors, and implementation partners
  • Establish strategic alliances with research institutions, think tanks, and technical organizations

Organizational Capacity Development

  • Build internal capacity on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and environmental management
  • Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of climate and environmental professionals
  • Guide the organization's internal environmental sustainability practices and carbon footprint reduction
  • Provide technical support and advisory services to other departments and programs

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Environmental Science, Climate Science, Sustainable Development, Natural Resource Management, or related field
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in climate change, environmental management, or sustainable development
  • At least 8 years in senior management positions with demonstrated leadership in climate or environmental initiatives
  • Strong track record of successful program development, implementation, and resource mobilization
  • Experience working with international organizations, governments, and diverse stakeholders

Knowledge and Expertise

  • Deep understanding of climate science, policy frameworks, and global environmental agreements
  • Expert knowledge of climate finance mechanisms, carbon markets, and sustainable business models
  • Familiarity with development challenges in emerging economies and the Global South
  • Strong grasp of monitoring, evaluation, and learning frameworks for climate and environmental programs
  • Understanding of environmental standards, certification systems, and reporting frameworks
