Purpose of Position:

  • 1) To provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children placed in the nursery aged 3 months to 5 years
  • 2) To give support to other personnel/staff within the nursery
  • 3) To implement the daily routines of individual children in your care
  • 4) Respect the confidentiality of parents and other staff members by not passing on any information other than to the manager and the management team.

Responsible to:

The Nursery Manager, the Management Team and the Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 1) To implement childrens individual routines as closely as possible, ensuring that their daily needs are being met and that their journals reflect their ongoing development and interests.
  • 2) To mentor trainee staff, imparting the pertinent job knowledge to each activity.
  • 3) To ensure (as part of a team) that all play areas are consistently safe and secure and that all health and safety procedures are fully implemented.
  • 4) To settle in new children, liasing with / supporting parents and carers by offering a flexible settling in procedure.
  • 5) To be familiar with, and act according to the Nurserys safeguarding policies. In cases where abuse may be suspected or concerns are raised regarding a childs welfare, this must be communicated to the manager or a member of the management team in her absence. All incidents and accidents are recorded and reported according to the Nurserys policy.
  • 6) Ensure that any allegations about a parent/visitor/staff member are instantly reported to the senior member of staff in charge
  • 7) To ensure all of your planning is completed for your Key Children and that their journals are kept up to date with jottings, photos, art work, parent comments and termly assessment reports. Evidence checkers are completed daily to ensure the journals have examples of work/obs/pics. These must be closely monitored by the room supervisors every Friday.
  • 8) Work in partnership with the parents of all children to ensure the daily needs of the children are being met and information is shared. Report any shared concerns by parents/carers directly back to the senior member of staff in charge on the day.
  • 9) To work alongside parents and other professionals to ensure any children with additional needs are fully supported and their needs are being met. Also to ensure that the special needs policy and equal opportunity policy is fully adhered to.
  • 10) To carry out instructions given to you by senior members of staff in order to fulfil your duties within the Nursery. Report any concerns directly to your room supervisor.
  • 11) To be responsible for the cleaning, tidying and monitoring of the toys and equipment throughout the day. If you are aware of something that causes concern or that is not safe, you must reported it to the manager immediately. Risk assessments must be completed throughout the day and where appropriate to identify risks and put measures in place to reduce/eliminate the risks involved.
  • 12) To take responsibility for your own key children and inform parents and other staff of any relevant information, whilst ensuring confidentiality is met as defined in your handbooks.
  • 13) Support all staff and engage in good teamwork. Use your initiative to complete tasks throughout the day that are expected of you and link with your room supervisors when you require guidance and/or support.
  • 14) To ensure that all children are supervised at all times, this is particularly important during free flow indoors/outdoors. Regular headcounts must be completed against the register and at all doors leading to the outdoor areas. These must then be recorded on the headcount forms located by the doors. It is your responsibility to be aware of where your key children are located at all times.
  • 15) To ensure (and instruct trainee staff) that children are always looking clean and tidy throughout the day and at the end of each session. Childrens belongings must be returned to their parents at the end of each day.
  • 16) Ensure that all relationships with parents are strictly professional and always promote a positive attitude on behalf of the nursery. You are not permitted to use social networking sites and have current parents as friends.
  • 17) To conduct childrens mealtimes and snack times in a quiet, calm and controlled manner. Mealtimes are an important part of the day and are very sociable periods of time. These should not be rushed and the children should be able to take their time and enjoy self serving (where appropriate) and staff are sat at the tables with them promoting a family atmosphere. Ensure that they all receive sufficient portion sizes for their age and development. Endeavour to be organised and prepare flannels etc so that getting down from the table is a calm and organised period of time.
  • 18) To be responsible for the setting up of all meal times, adhere to the health and hygiene policies and ensure that the areas are cleaned up directly after each meal time (including snacks, breakfast, lunch and tea)
  • 19) Ensure childrens individual dietary requirements are met and all staff are informed that are involved with the child i.e.) vegetarian, vegan etc. Always share relevant paper work with new staff in the rooms such as my childs story, daily meal numbers and dietary requirements form to ensure they are aware of childrens individual dietary needs.
  • 20) Show children the correct table manners and use of cutlery by sitting with them and modelling how it should be done. Make sure that children have fresh water available at all times throughout the day.
  • 21) To be responsible for toileting, changing, and potty training within the nursery according to the Nursery policies.
  • 22) To discipline in the correct manner according to our company policy. To never shout, raise your voice, victimise or belittle children in your care.
  • 23) When taking children out of the nursery to make sure that the children are safe secure and happy. The trip should always be well organised and if there were to be an accident or an incident to be sure what your role would be.
  • 24) To complete risk assessments according to our policy.
  • 25) To adhere to a smart dress code at all times, with hair kept back from your face, minimal jewellery and always wearing the correct attire etc.
  • 26) To attend out of work activities e.g.) staff meetings, training courses, fund raising events and the Christmas party.
  • 27) To regard each child as an individual and to provide childcare which will consistently reflect and show respect for race, culture and disability and to encourage and nurture this in junior staff.
  • 28) To communicate with your line Manager/Deputy Manager/Nursery Manager at any time if you feel that you are being treated unfairly or in any way different to your fellow colleagues.
  • 29) To maintain and follow our uniform policy and to always be an ambassador to the business.
