Job Description:

  • Responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of Blood and Blood Products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of Blood & Blood Products.
  • Rotating into any area of the department as required.
  • Participating fully in the departments 24/7 rota service.
  • Prioritizing the completion of urgent requests.
  • Telephoning important results to an appropriate person when necessary.
  • Responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Validating and releasing results to service users as required.
  • Maintaining a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate.
  • Preparing and ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
  • Using consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • Performing the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions.
  • Processing internal and external quality control samples as required.
  • Participating in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
  • Participating in risk management of the department including the reporting of adverse incidents.
  • Assisting in research and development projects as required.
  • Assisting in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Participating in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertaking continued professional development.
  • Personally, responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration.
  • Participating in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance.
