PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

1. Prepare the surgeries, including preparation of instruments, materials and equipment

required for all surgical/ orthodontic procedures.

2. Work alongside Consultants and Specialty Doctors with surgical procedures both under

local and general anaesthesia.

3. To attend wards and ED when required with Consultant or Specialty Doctor and assist with

any procedure necessary should the need arise.

4. To provide four handed dentistry throughout patients treatment where required. Act upon

clinician requests whilst providing chair side assistance.

5. To communicate and co-ordinate effectively with appropriate clinicians, staff, professional

bodies and external agencies.

6. To give patient and/ or patients relative (or representative) verbal and written instructions

prior to and following any Max Fax or Orthodontic procedures

7. Advise, triage and prioritise patients to ensure they receive the appropriate care.

8. Recognises, responds to and appropriately manages emergency situations.

9. Maintain high standards of cleanliness in clinical and non clinical areas including weekly

cleaning routines. Complete cleaning records in line with Trust policy and guidelines.

10. Restocking of clinics after each session.

11. Ensure correct disinfection of impressions before dispatch to laboratory.

12. Liaise with the laboratory to ensure patients laboratory work is complete.

13. Ensure all specimens obtained reach the hospital pathology department safely on a daily

basis.

14. Ensure that instruments are sent to Synergy for decontamination in a timely fashion. Track

the instruments as they leave and return to the department. Raise any queries with Senior

Dental Nurses or Department Manager/ Sister

15. Process and upload radiographs complying with current regulations.

16. Maintaining levels of in house patient information leaflets.

17. Undertake any other appropriate duties as may be assigned by the Senior Dental Nurse or

Department Manager/ Sister.

Non Clinical

1. Manages own workload, co-ordinating and prioritising the care he/she delivers. Recognises

his/her limitations and escalates to more senior staff if needed.

Establish and maintain effective communication with individuals/groups about difficult or

complex issues. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when

the rights of patients and others may be infringed.

4. Ensure own practice complies with Data Protection/Confidentiality/Caldicott principles.

5. Take responsibility for safeguarding and compliance with the requirements of the Data

Protection Act 1998 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

6. To adhere to all health and safety policies and be aware of all policies and procedures within

the Trust/ Department.

7. Develop the skills and competence of self and others by acting as a role model and support to

all staff

Teaching and Training

1. Contribute to educational and nursing audits and the subsequent implementation of action

plans.

2. Provides patients, families and carers with relevant teaching and health promotion.

Role responsibilities

1. Acts with integrity to uphold the reputation of the dental nursing profession and the Trust.

Deliver care with compassion, sensitivity and empathy.

2. Participates in Clinical Governance to maintain and improve standards of patient care. Assist in

the monitoring and auditing of the quality of care through a range of strategies, including risk

management, incident reporting, complaints, research and effectiveness monitoring and clinical

audit. Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues. Contributes to the

development of the service.

3. Demonstrates commitment to the vision and objectives of the clinical area and the Trust.

Personal development

1. Takes responsibility for completing statutory and mandatory training in accordance with the

Trusts training needs analysis and mandatory training matrix. Makes effective use of e-

learning opportunities to achieve compliance with mandatory training.

2. Works in partnership with manager to develop and deliver on Specific, Measurable, Achievable

and Time framed (SMART) objectives at annual appraisal and personal development planning.

3. Takes responsibility for own continuing professional development and performance,

maintaining own portfolio in accordance with re-registration requirements. Is able to identify

own development needs in relation to current practice and future plans, setting personal

development objectives
