About the job Controller
Our client is seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Controller to lead the financial operations of a growing mechanical contracting company. This role is critical in driving financial accuracy, job cost visibility, and strategic decision-making across the organization. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in construction or mechanical contracting, with a strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, and project-based accounting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and financial reporting
- Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company financial policies
Job Costing & Project Accounting
- Manage and maintain accurate job costing systems across all projects
- Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, including revenue recognition and cost tracking
- Partner with project managers to review project financial performance, budgets, and forecasts
- Analyze job profitability and provide actionable insights to leadership
Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategy
- Develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts aligned with company goals
- Provide financial analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making
- Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial health of the business
- Identify risks and opportunities within project pipelines and overall operations
Team Leadership & Process Improvement
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team
- Implement and improve accounting systems, controls, and workflows
- Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency and reporting accuracy
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, estimating, and executive leadership
Compliance & Controls
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with all financial regulations
- Coordinate audits, tax filings, and external reporting requirements
- Manage relationships with external auditors, banks, and financial partners
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
- 7–15+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in construction or mechanical contracting
- Strong expertise in job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project-based financials
- Experience managing accounting teams in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
- Proficiency with accounting/ERP systems (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, Foundation, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills and strong financial analysis capabilities
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner with both finance and operations teams
Preferred Experience
- Background in HVAC, plumbing, or industrial mechanical contracting
- Experience with multi-project, high-revenue construction environments
- CPA or CMA certification
