Birmingham Corps is a people-centered workforce development nonprofit working to train, develop, and place underestimated Birmingham residents into meaningful jobs that make a difference. Since our launch in June 2022, we have helped over one thousand residents navigate the job market and supported over one hundred participants through intensive coaching, job readiness training, and placement into career pathways. Our mission is to enlist and mobilize talent to accelerate social change and build a more connected and economically vibrant Birmingham.
As we enter our next chapter, Birmingham Corps is seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead the organization through its next phase of growth. The role offers the opportunity to scale impact, deepen partnerships, and position Birmingham Corps as a national model for locally-driven workforce solutions.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive and strategic leader of Birmingham Corps. The ED will be responsible for executing the FY26-FY28 Strategic Plan, ensuring program excellence, growing revenue and partnerships, developing staff, and serving as the organization’s external ambassador. The ED will also oversee a team of five staff and manage an annual budget of approximately $1.2M.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Leadership & Strategy
Lead implementation of the FY26-FY28 Strategic Plan
- Drive execution of strategic goals: train 261 new residents, place 81 in jobs, grow to 77 employer/community partners, raise $2M in sustainable funding
- Maintain a strong, people-first organizational culture rooted in transparency, collaboration, and results
Fundraising & Financial Management
- Lead all fundraising efforts, including major gifts, grants, events, and public funding
Steward relationships with institutional, corporate, and individual donors
- Manage financial planning, reporting, and compliance in partnership with the Board Treasurer and Grants Manager
Program Oversight
- Ensure successful delivery of career training, coaching, and job placement services
- Support team in building cohort-based career pipelines in healthcare, education, and community development
- Lead continuous improvement efforts through data-driven decision-making and feedback loops
Team Management & Development
- Supervise senior leadership, including the Director of Programs & Partnerships and Grants Manager
- Foster a high-performing, mission-driven team through coaching and accountability
Oversee recruitment, performance management, and staff culture
External Relations & Advocacy
- Represent Birmingham Corps to funders, government leaders, partners, and media
- Champion policies and partnerships that support workforce access and opportunity for underestimated talent
- Collaborate with peers across the workforce development, education, and public sectors
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
You are a strategic, entrepreneurial leader with a strong track record of results in nonprofit management, workforce development, or a related field. You are energized by building and growing initiatives that are grounded in community and driven by data. You are a fundraiser, a team builder, and a systems thinker. Most importantly, you are deeply committed to ensuring that underestimated people are seen, valued, and supported to thrive.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of leadership experience in nonprofit, government, philanthropy, or workforce sectors
Demonstrated success in fundraising and managing a $1M+ budget
- Strong people management skills and experience building high-performing teams
Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
- Knowledge of workforce development, career pathways, or social innovation models
- Experience in Birmingham or strong understanding of local context preferred
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree a plus

Competitive salary commensurate with experience starting at $120,000
