The Director of Engineering will lead and oversee all engineering and project management functions to ensure technical excellence, process improvement, and on-time delivery of high-quality products. This position is responsible for managing a team of approximately 12 engineers and technical professionals, aligning engineering activities with production, quality, and customer requirements. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, a background in metal fabrication, and proven experience driving innovation and operational efficiency in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the engineering department, including design, manufacturing engineering, estimating, and project management.
- Oversee all projects to ensure they meet deadlines, cost goals, and quality standards.
- Develop and implement engineering processes that improve efficiency, throughput, and manufacturability.
- Work closely with production, operations, sales, and quality teams to align engineering deliverables with customer needs and production schedules.
- Standardize documentation, drawings, and workflows to improve accuracy and consistency across projects.
- Mentor, coach, and develop a team of engineers and technical staff to promote accountability, growth, and excellence.
- Support quoting and estimating for new fabrication projects.
- Manage technical communication with customers, resolving design and manufacturability challenges effectively.
- Identify and recommend new manufacturing technologies, automation opportunities, and equipment upgrades to enhance company capabilities.
- Monitor and report key performance indicators such as on-time delivery, engineering throughput, and project completion efficiency.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and cross-department collaboration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a metal fabrication, machining, or job shop environment.
- At least 3 years of leadership or management experience overseeing engineering or technical teams.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes, including laser cutting, forming, welding, and machining.
- Proven ability to manage complex manufacturing projects from design through production.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with CAD systems such as SolidWorks and experience with ERP or MRP systems.
- Demonstrated track record of improving engineering processes, efficiency, and delivery performance.
