About the job Civil Engineer – Site Development (Land Development / Civil Design)
Overview
We are seeking a Civil Engineer with site development experience to join a growing engineering team focused on civil design, land development, and municipal infrastructure projects. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of projects from concept through construction in a collaborative, hands-on environment.
This is an excellent fit for a mid-level engineer (3+ years of experience) ready to step into greater responsibility across design, coordination, and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support civil/site design projects from concept through construction
- Develop and review grading, drainage, stormwater, utility, and site development plans
- Perform engineering calculations and ensure compliance with local, state, and municipal standards
- Prepare construction plan sets and support permitting and approval processes
- Coordinate with land surveyors, planners, clients, and municipal agencies
- Support construction-phase engineering and respond to review comments
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE required; ABET-accredited preferred)
- 3+ years of civil engineering experience in site development or land development
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (AutoCAD Civil 3D strongly preferred)
- Experience producing civil engineering drawings and construction plan sets
- Knowledge of grading, drainage, stormwater, and utility design principles
- Strong communication and coordination skills
Preferred Experience
- Experience with commercial, residential, municipal, or industrial site development projects
- Familiarity with municipal permitting and plan review processes
- Exposure to hydrology/hydraulics tools (e.g., HydroCAD, StormCAD, HEC-RAS, or similar)
- Experience working in small to mid-sized consulting engineering firms
- EIT certification or progress toward PE licensure
Technical Skills
- AutoCAD / Civil 3D (surface modeling, grading, alignments, earthwork)
- Site grading, drainage, and stormwater design
- Utility layout (water, sanitary, storm systems)
- Construction document production for municipal submittals
- Engineering calculations and regulatory compliance
Location & Work Environment
- On-site role based in Wheeling, IL (Chicago NW suburbs)
- Typical commute range: 20–40 minutes from surrounding suburbs (e.g., Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Des Plaines, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect)
- Local candidates preferred due to the on-site nature of the role
