Director of Government Auditing (CPA) – Hybrid | Oakland, MD

A respected public accounting firm is seeking an experienced Director of Government Auditing to lead and oversee government financial statement audits and single audits. This hybrid role (Oakland, MD area) is ideal for a CPA with strong Audit & Assurance (A&A) expertise who enjoys leadership, client engagement, and high-impact public sector work.

This position combines hands-on audit leadership, regulatory oversight, client relationship management, and team mentorship in a collaborative, mission-driven firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and review government financial statement audits from planning through completion
  • Manage and oversee single audits in compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Ensure audit quality, accuracy, and adherence to professional standards
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and primary contact for government clients
  • Mentor and guide audit staff and senior team members
  • Manage engagement timelines and improve audit workflows
  • Preferred: Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Engagement

Qualifications

  • Active CPA license (required)
  • 6–8 years of public accounting experience
  • Strong background in Audit & Assurance (A&A)
  • Proven experience with governmental audits, financial statements, and single audits
  • Client-facing leadership and audit team management experience
  • Ability to work hybrid in or near Oakland, Maryland

Compensation & Schedule

  • Salary: ~$120,000 (negotiable based on experience)
  • Full-time role with seasonal audit work (June–January)
  • Off-season focus on CPE requirements (80 A&A hours over 2 years; firm covers costs)
  • No onsite requirement during non-audit months
