Backup & Disaster Recovery (DRaaS) Specialist - Cape Town

Key Responsibilities

  • Backup Operations
    • Design, implement, and manage automated backup schedules for critical systems.
    • Define and enforce data retention policies to meet business and compliance requirements.
    • Monitor backup performance and resolve issues proactively.
  • Disaster Recovery (DRaaS) Planning
    • Design and implement disaster recovery solutions, ensuring RTO (Recovery Time Objective) and RPO (Recovery Point Objective) targets are met.
    • Manage replication strategies (on-prem, hybrid, and cloud).
    • Develop and maintain detailed DR runbooks.
  • Testing & Compliance
    • Conduct regular DR testing, failover simulations, and system recovery drills.
    • Ensure solutions align with ISO 22301 compliance standards.
    • Work closely with compliance and audit teams to provide evidence of resilience.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Stay updated with emerging DRaaS technologies and practices.
    • Provide recommendations for improving resilience and reducing recovery times.
    • Train IT staff and business units on backup and recovery procedures.
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with infrastructure, cloud, and security teams to ensure integrated DR strategies.
    • Support business continuity planning across departments.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years experience in backup, storage, and disaster recovery solutions (preferably in enterprise cloud & hybrid environments).
  • Strong knowledge of DRaaS technologies (Hitachi, Veeam, Commvault, Azure Backup, AWS Backup, etc.).
  • Hands-on expertise in:
    • Automated backup scheduling and retention policies
    • Data replication across sites and/or cloud
    • RTO/RPO design and planning
    • DR testing and failover procedures
  • Familiarity with ISO 22301 (Business Continuity Management) standards and compliance frameworks.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in backup/restore failures, performance, and capacity planning.
  • Knowledge of networking, virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V), and storage systems.
  • Relevant certifications an advantage:
    • Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) / Commvault / Hitachi Data Protection
    • ISO 22301 Lead Implementer / Auditor
    • Cloud certifications (Azure, AWS, GCP) preferred.
