Passenger Assistant

 Job Description:

We are working closely alongside with local authority in Shropshire to assist with the appointment of a Passenger Assistant on a 3-month contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay: £12.18- £15.33 per hour

Summary:

The Passenger Assistant is a crucial role responsible for the safe, secure, and comfortable door-to-door transportation of passengers, primarily children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), and vulnerable adults using Shropshire Council's transport services.Working closely with the driver, the Passenger Assistant ensures the welfare and appropriate supervision of passengers during their journeys to and from schools, day centres, or residential facilities, strictly adhering to safeguarding and health and safety protocols.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safety, safeguarding, well-being, and appropriate supervision of all passengers throughout the journey.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and alighting the vehicle safely, including those with mobility challenges or physical disabilities.
  • Ensure all passengers are seated securely and that seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair restraint equipment are correctly fitted and used.
  • Liaise effectively and courteously with parents/carers, school/day centre staff, and the Passenger Transport Team (PTT) regarding any issues during transportation (e.g., changes to health/well-being, behavioural problems, or delays).
  • Adhere to the Council's policies, including the Code of Conduct for Operators, Drivers & Passenger Assistants.
  • Respond quickly and calmly in the event of an emergency, breakdown, or incident (medical or otherwise), following established procedures.
  • Participate in all mandatory training, including the Passenger Assistant Training Scheme (PATS), safeguarding, first aid, and moving & handling.
  • Be available for the standby/call-out rota or alternative duties as required to cover colleague absences or route cancellations.

Essentials:

  • Knowledge, appreciation, or experience of working with people with special needs (e.g., learning difficulties, physical disabilities, challenging behaviour) or vulnerable adults in a support/care role.
  • A thorough understanding of safeguarding principles relating to children and vulnerable adults.
  • Physically fit and able to assist passengers with mobility difficulties, including the manual dexterity required for securing and manoeuvring occupied wheelchairs and operating vehicle lifts/clamps.

  • This role requires an Enhanced DBS
