SECTION TWO: KEY AREAS

Job Summary:

  • A member of the management staff.

  • Guides and motivates the maintenance team.

  • Manages the entire engineering team responsible for the general maintenance of the hotel.

  • Oversees preventive and corrective mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and equipment operations.

  • Leads the guest complaint recovery process to achieve 100% guest satisfaction prior to departure.

  • Trains all staff on the maintenance of hotel equipment and machines.

SECTION THREE: RESPONSIBILITIES


General & Technical Knowledge

  • Ensure the smooth and organized running of the Maintenance department according to the standards set by management.

  • Lead by personal example by following the Company's Mission, Vision & Guiding Principles.

  • Comply with the Company's Code of Conduct.

  • Responsible for engineering and maintenance operations of the hotel, property, restaurant, and grounds.

  • Respond to engineering and maintenance concerns, as well as all building-related safety concerns.

  • Perform and/or monitor maintenance and preventative maintenance projects.

  • Maintain departmental compliance with hotel maintenance procedures.

  • Support hotel departmental maintenance programs and execute daily, weekly, and monthly checklists.

  • Assist in the supervision of temporary maintenance associates.

  • Assist management in specifying proper supplies and equipment for operations.

  • Deal with guest-related concerns effectively.

  • Maintain the guest rooms, public space, and back of the hotel areas in good repair by performing tasks related to a variety of trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, painting, wall covering, and tiling.

  • Possess knowledge of basic hand/power tool operation.

  • Oversee the cleaning and maintenance of the pool and spa area.

  • Perform any other duties as may be allocated.

People Management

  • Organization/Manning: Establish and maintain department organization, manning, and productivity, ensuring a smooth operation based on forecasted occupancy.

  • Adopt a hands-on approach to operations, be visible, and monitor staff to achieve optimum results.

  • Recognize VIPs and provide special attention and recognition.

  • Stay updated with engineering trends worldwide and make appropriate suggestions to the General Manager.

  • Recruitment: Achieve a record of success in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring people (getting the right person in the right job and keeping in mind that skills can be trained, but attitude cannot).

  • Training/Development: Be aware of and enforce all fire-life-safety procedures. Remain current in all updates regarding new procedures and training. Ensure staff is fully trained in emergency procedures.

  • Performance Appraisal: Identify career goals and guide employees in their career growth and development. Recognize outstanding individual performances and deal with substandard performance fairly, immediately, and constructively. Conduct annual performance appraisals for each staff member.


Work Environment

  • Utilize and develop communication tools and channels for the dissemination of information and workflow in all sections.

  • Build teamwork and enhance the team's commitment to their work and the hotel.

Customer Loyalty

  • Service Standards: Maintain and enforce all quality, service standards, and procedures for the Maintenance team.

  • Ensure the quality and consistency of all guest and staff safety programs and follow up.

  • Monitor overall divisional progress in areas of People, Profit, and Product.

  • Monitor personnel to ensure guests receive prompt, cordial attention, and personal recognition.

  • Guest History: Ensure guest preferences are collected and acted upon to delight guests.


Operational Processes and Control

  • Processes: Constantly review current procedures and practices to ensure they are simple for staff and guests.

  • Internal Controls: Establish standards, conduct spot checks on internal controls, and ensure compliance.

  • Equipment Supplies: Review and evaluate all hotel equipment and supplies periodically to select appropriate products for purchase.


Administration & Financials

  • Budget and Forecast: Analyze monthly reports and review opportunities for improvement. Set the Maintenance Budget, monitor Profit & Loss, and handle cash flow throughout the year. Supervise maintenance and work as part of the Yield Management team to maximize revenue.

  • Capital Expenditure (CAPEX): Prepare CAPEX budgets to review new equipment requirements for the following year to ensure maximum quality output and productivity.

  • Operating Equipment Operations: Conduct inventory and study opportunities to reduce losses and damages. Ensure consistent and accurate inventories are taken in accordance with company policies and procedures, and documentation is compiled.

  • Reports: Prepare, review, and submit all reports in a timely manner.


Inspection and Preventive Maintenance Program

  • Inspection: Conduct random daily checks of guest services and facilities.

  • Maintenance Program: Ensure that all preventive maintenance and general cleaning programs/schedules are in place and executed accordingly.


Health & Safety and Security

  • Be familiar with Kenyan, OSHA, FTO, HACCP, and other Company Health & Safety Policies, ensuring your areas promote and comply with them.

  • Take responsibility to rectify hazardous situations, reporting major areas of concern to the General Manager and/or designated department.

  • Actively enforce property safety, first aid, fire, and emergency procedures in your area of responsibility.

  • Ensure the highest level of safety and security by facilitating effective training programs that deliver a high degree of awareness amongst staff.

  • Ensure department key control procedures are strictly adhered to.

  • Ensure all chemicals are stored and used safely.


Environmental Responsibility

  • Ensure that environmental initiatives are adhered to in the workplace and participate in community activities and programs.

  • Ensure the environmentally friendly disposal and recycling of garbage is carried out in a proper manner according to guidelines set by management, the County Council, and the Kenyan Government.


SECTION FOUR: SPECIFICATIONS


  • Physical Characteristics: Must present a highly presentable and professional appearance.

  • Languages: Fluent in written and spoken English, plus at least one other language.

  • Qualifications & Training: Requires at least a 4-year degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Work Experience: Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience as an engineer or in a related hospitality professional area.

  • Required Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal, management, computer literacy, analytical, and supervisory skills.

  • Disposition & Attributes: Strong commitment to professional values and personal integrity. Proven ability to lead, influence, and motivate a team while expressing persuasive, practical operational solutions.

  • Other Requirements: Possesses strong professional initiative and is fully able to work flexible hours to support 24/7 hotel operations.
