About the job Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - B2
Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer – B2 (Avionics)
Location: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Department: Engineering / MRO
Employment type: Full time, residential, unaccompanied
About the Role
Cakum Global is recruiting a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (B2 Avionics) for our aviation client in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
This is a certifying avionics position on a regional turboprop fleet. Avionics defects on this kind of operation are rarely the textbook ones — they are intermittent, weather-related, humidity-related and frequently sit in the wiring rather than the box. You will be expected to find them properly rather than clear them by rotation of line replaceable units.
It will suit a B2 engineer who wants genuine fault-finding work and full certifying responsibility, rather than remove-and-replace within a narrow scope.
What You Will Be Doing
- Carrying out and certifying scheduled and unscheduled line and base maintenance on avionic and electrical systems, within the privileges of your licence and type ratings.
- Issuing Certificates of Release to Service for avionic and electrical work in accordance with regulatory requirements and company authorisations.
- Fault-finding and rectifying defects across autoflight, communications and navigation, electrical power generation and distribution, indicating and recording, lighting, fire protection and warning systems.
- Troubleshooting aircraft wiring, bonding, connectors and looms, including intermittent faults driven by moisture, vibration and heat.
- Carrying out functional and operational testing of avionic systems following installation, repair or modification.
- Supporting the electrical elements of flight controls, landing gear and other mechanical systems in conjunction with B1 colleagues.
- Embodying Airworthiness Directives, Service Bulletins, Engineering Orders and avionic modifications against current approved data.
- Providing technical support during AOG, defect rectification and operational recovery, including out of hours where the operation requires it.
- Completing accurate technical records, worksheets and defect reports, and closing defects with a real rectification rather than a repeat deferral.
- Contributing avionics input to reliability monitoring and repeat-defect investigation.
- Working closely with Maintenance Watch, Continuing Airworthiness, Planning, Technical Services, Stores and external avionics repair vendors.
- Supervising and mentoring unlicensed engineers, technicians and apprentices, and building local avionics capability.
- Maintaining compliance with company maintenance procedures and the Engineering Quality and Safety Management Systems.
Essential Requirements
Applications will not progress without these.
- A current and valid Category B2 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence — CASA PNG, or a CASA Australia, EASA, FAA or NZCAA licence that can be validated or converted to CASA PNG requirements.
- Demonstrated experience certifying avionic and electrical maintenance on commercial transport aircraft.
- Practical wiring and schematic fault-finding capability — the ability to work a fault through wiring diagrams to root cause.
- Sound working knowledge of continuing airworthiness requirements, approved maintenance data and maintenance organisation procedures.
- Fitness to work in a physically demanding hangar and line environment, and the ability to hold the required medical and security clearances.
- Willingness to relocate to Port Moresby on a residential, unaccompanied basis.
Highly Regarded
- Type ratings on ATR 72 and/or DHC-8 (Dash 8). Current turboprop type experience is the single strongest differentiator for this role.
- Experience across both glass cockpit and legacy analogue fits, including EFIS, autoflight and flight guidance systems.
- Hands-on experience with communications and navigation systems, weather radar, TCAS, EGPWS, transponders and ADS-B.
- Experience with avionics test equipment and the interpretation of built-in test and fault history data.
- Familiarity with computerised maintenance tracking or maintenance management systems.
- Previous work in remote, regional or emerging-market aviation environments, where vendor support and spares availability are less predictable.
- Experience developing local avionics staff and building type capability within a team.
The Person We Are Looking For
- A systematic fault-finder. Comfortable being the person who chases an intermittent fault to root cause instead of deferring it again.
- Methodical and calm under AOG or operational pressure, and prepared to make airworthiness decisions within licence privileges without being pushed past them.
- Meticulous with documentation. In this environment the technical record is the only evidence the work was done properly.
- Practical and self-sufficient, and able to work a problem through when vendor support is not immediately available.
- An effective communicator in a multicultural workplace, and genuinely willing to teach.
- Flexible about shift work and shifting maintenance priorities where the operation requires it.
Living and Working in Papua New Guinea
Port Moresby is a rewarding but demanding posting. Expatriate engineering staff typically live in secure accommodation with structured transport arrangements, and the working environment carries security, health and logistics considerations that are managed but should not be underestimated.
This position is offered on an unaccompanied basis. It is not suited to relocation with dependants, and we would rather be straightforward about that now than have anyone make plans on the wrong assumption.
Remuneration, roster, leave and travel entitlements are set by the operator and will be confirmed with shortlisted candidates during screening. We do not quote figures we have not had confirmed.
How to Apply
Apply with a current CV that clearly sets out your licence category, issuing authority, aircraft type ratings and certifying experience. Applications that do not show licence and type detail are difficult to assess and will usually be held rather than progressed.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide licence documentation, type rating evidence and logbook extracts, and to confirm notice period, citizenship and residency, police clearance and medical fitness.
Referrals and confidential enquiries are welcome and can be directed to Cakum Global.
