The Opportunity
We are seeking a senior Employment Lawyer to establish and lead our client's new employment law practice area in Perth. This is an exciting opportunity to build a specialised practice from the ground up, working autonomously with diverse clients across various industries whilst contributing to their collaborative and innovative firm culture.
As this is a newly created role, you'll have the opportunity to shape the direction of their employment law offering and work closely with their existing practice groups to provide comprehensive legal solutions to their clients.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advisory & Client Management
- Take full responsibility for managing employment law matters from inception to completion
- Provide comprehensive employment law advice to corporate and commercial clients
- Draft, review and negotiate employment contracts, policies, and workplace agreements
- Advise on workplace relations matters, including enterprise bargaining and industrial disputes
- Conduct workplace investigations and manage disciplinary processes
- Represent clients in employment tribunals, courts, and mediation proceedings
- Build and manage your own client portfolio with full autonomy over case management
Business Development & Client Relationships
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive, accessible service
- Identify opportunities for cross-referral within the firm's practice areas
- Contribute to business development activities and networking opportunities
- Collaborate with other practice groups on multi-disciplinary matters
Professional Excellence
- Stay current with employment law developments and regulatory changes
- Mentor junior lawyers and support staff development
- Contribute to firm knowledge sharing and best practice initiatives
- Maintain detailed file management and billing practices
Essential Requirements
- Admitted legal practitioner in Western Australia (or eligible for admission)
- Minimum 5-8 years' experience in employment law practice with demonstrated ability to run matters independently
- Strong understanding of Fair Work Act, WA Industrial Relations Act, and related legislation
- Proven track record of managing complex employment law matters from start to finish
- Experience with workplace investigations, tribunal appearances, and dispute resolution
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong client relationship management abilities
- Demonstrated business development skills and ability to build a client base
- Strong commercial acumen and problem-solving capabilities
Desirable Attributes
- Experience with enterprise bargaining and industrial relations
- Knowledge of WHS and discrimination law
- Previous experience in a mid-tier or boutique legal practice
- Understanding of sectors such as energy & resources, construction, or technology
- Active involvement in professional associations or community organisations
