Mechanical Lead (Erection, Testing & Commissioning) - Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP)

Experience: 18–20 Years
Plant Type: Combined Cycle Power Plant (~230 MW)
Location: Project Site

1. POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanical Lead shall be responsible for complete execution, supervision, and management of erection, pre-commissioning, testing, and commissioning of all mechanical systems of a Combined Cycle Power Plant.

The role requires deep expertise in Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine, HRSG, Diverter Damper/Bypass Stack systems, rotating equipment, valves, and Balance of Plant (BOP), along with strong site leadership and cross-functional coordination.

The incumbent will also support overall site management in the absence of the Project Head, ensuring smooth execution and adherence to project timelines.

Owendo, being a relocation project site, the posting will be initially at the GVK site for a period of 6 months max, till completion of dismantling and transportation of Plant & later on the candidate has to relocate to the final location Gabon during construction of Plant , Installation, Erection & Commissioning.

However, the other two Projects, Port Gentil & Lambrane, being Simple cycle Plants, with bare minimum BOP equipment & less challenges during Erection & Commissioning phase, we will have the similar JD but with lesser experience , which I shall also share with HR.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Erection & Installation

  • Lead and supervise erection of:
    • Gas Turbine & Generator mechanical systems
    • Steam Turbine & Generator mechanical systems
    • HRSG pressure parts and auxiliaries
    • Bypass Stack / Diverter Damper systems
    • Emergency DG sets
  • Ensure:
    • Alignment, leveling, grouting, and torqueing as per specifications
    • Compliance with approved drawings and OEM procedures

B. Rotating Equipment (Critical Scope)

  • Erection, alignment, testing, and commissioning of:
    • Boiler Feed Pumps (BFP)
    • Condensate Extraction Pumps (CEP)
    • Vacuum Pumps
    • Cooling Water Pumps (Main & Auxiliary)
  • Exposure to:
    • Vertical turbine pumps
    • Horizontal split casing pumps
    • Ring section pumps
  • Compressors:
    • Reciprocating compressors
    • Rotary compressors

C. HRSG & Steam System

  • Supervise erection and commissioning of:
    • HRSG modules and piping interfaces
    • Drum internals and associated equipment
  • Valve systems:
    • Steam, feedwater, condensate, compressed air, potable water
    • High-pressure valves and control valves

D. Valve Installation & Testing

  • Erection, inspection, and testing of:
    • Isolation valves
    • Control valves
    • Non-return valves
  • Safety valves:
    • Drum safety valves
    • Superheater safety valves
    • Relief valves across systems
  • Conduct:
    • Set pressure testing
    • Seat tightness testing

E. BOP Systems (Mechanical Scope)

Lead mechanical execution for:

  • DM Water Systems
  • Fire Water Systems (including fire pumps)
  • Cooling Water System
  • Compressed Air System
  • Potable Water System
  • HVAC systems

F. Pre-Commissioning Activities

  • Flushing and cleaning:
    • Oil flushing (lube oil systems)
    • Water flushing (DM/condensate systems)
  • Hydro testing and leak checks
  • Alignment verification and coupling checks
  • Rotation checks and trial runs

G. Commissioning

  • Lead commissioning of:
    • GT, ST, HRSG mechanical systems
    • Pumps, compressors, fans, and auxiliaries
  • Conduct:
    • Cold commissioning
    • Hot commissioning
    • Performance and reliability testing

H. Coordination & Interface Management

  • Coordinate with:
    • Civil, Electrical & C&I Leads
    • Piping Lead and erection teams
  • Ensure:
    • Interface readiness across disciplines
    • Clearance of interdependencies

I. Vendor & Contractor Management

  • Coordinate with OEMs:
    • GT, ST, HRSG, pumps, compressors
  • Supervise and control:
    • Multiple subcontractors
  • Ensure:
    • Quality of work
    • Adherence to schedule
    • Safety compliance

J. Site Leadership Role

  • Act as Site In-Charge in absence of Project Head
  • Responsible for:
    • Daily execution planning
    • Inter-department coordination
    • Issue resolution and escalation
  • Maintain:
    • Progress tracking and reporting

K. Quality & Documentation

  • Review and ensure:
    • Inspection reports
    • Test certificates
    • Alignment reports
    • As-built documentation
  • Ensure punch point identification and closure

L. Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce:
    • Permit to Work (PTW)
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
  • Ensure safe practices during:
    • Lifting, erection, testing, and commissioning
  • Compliance with:
    • Project HSE standards

3. REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

4. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 18–20 years of experience in Combined Cycle / Thermal Power Plant projects
  • Extensive experience in erection, testing & commissioning

5. DESIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Hands-on experience in:
    • GT/ST/HRSG commissioning
    • Large rotating equipment
    • High-pressure steam systems
  • Exposure to international standards (ASME / API / ISO) preferred
